Galveston or Crystal Beach, Tx area?

My family has a years long love affair with Galveston and Bolivar Pen, Tx. We plan on visiting this summer and seeing what is left of our beloved area after Ike. This will be our first time to take Daizy and I really need some dog-friendly advice. Any places that welcome dogs, pet-friendly beach houses, even a good dog-sitter so we can take one day to enjoy Schlitterbahn. Also, we would take any information about areas that we should avoid since Ike. Thanks!
