Show question/histiocytoma...

My dog has a histicytoma bump on is left thigh (Judges Side) and it is pretty noticable, about a size of a dime, maybe a little smaller, but it is bright red.

Will that effect the outcome of whether he could win his class or not? Would the judge not even look at him due to this?

thanks

I wouldn't put it high on the worry list. You should have 4-5 days to be treating it and hopefully can have it dried up enough so it won't be bright red.

Judges have so little time to really look at a dog, and since it it not on the head, it may not even be noticed.

what kind of stuff to you treat a histiocytoma with? my vet did not recommend anything, she said it would just go away after a 2-3 months.

One of my guys will get one about once a year. I use either Betadine or iodine, and give a good scrub once or twice a day. Just a scrub and no rinsing. The day of the show, don't scrub and leave the scab on, so it won't stand out so much.

My Ninya has one on her leg when she was about 7 months old. I showed her with it- she was a puppy getting her ring experience anyways and it was not that noticable. Hers went away in about 2 months.

My Bru also had one this year- his took about 5 months to go away but he is an older guy and it was on his foot.

Next time you go to the vet you may want to ask them about synotic. it worked really well our girls I think the main thing is just to scrub them. Hers lasted 4 weeks at 4 months old.

Thumbs up Histiocytoma Bump

Hello there;

We're not showing our little lady or anything but we just wanted to share what we just experienced with our little sweetie as it may help others, seeing as this Forum is always such a wonderful resource to go to when you have questions...

Our girl is around 7 months old and was just spayed last month. She also had a final set of booster shots at that time.

A few days after bringing her home we noticed a small bump on her side / back area. It seemed itchy to her and we checked to see if maybe she picked up a flea or tick or something but hadn't detected anything. It also occured that it may have had something to do with where her last booster shot was given.

Over the past month the bump gradually became larger and upon close inspection it was a little red and swollen and perhaps 1 cm. wide

We decided to bring her in for a closer look and today the vet used a needle to draw a sample which was examined under a microscope.

After about five minutes, we found out that it was a Histiocytoma Bump and we were given a little bottle of steriod type creamy drops called "Surolan" that we are to put on 2-3 times per day until it (hopefully) goes away soon.

The Doc said that they are common and with the cream they'll usually go away within a few weeks (they sometimes get bigger & then shrink down) but sometimes if the creams don't work they'll freeze the area and remove the bump which usually requires a couple stitches to help heal...

Thanks & good luck everyone - wiggle, wiggle,

G
