Jr. Handler age

The AKC states the age range for a Jr. Handler is from 9-18 years, but I was wondering if there is a process for petitioning for an exception for a slightly younger child (8 years)? I will contact the AKC Jr. Handler program directly with this question but in the meantime wondered if anyone had an answer.

Don't think so

The wording is clear, Junior: At least 9 years old but under 12 years old on the day of the show. Guess she'll have to wait another year. Doesn't mean she can't start practicing, right?

junior handling

I believe that UKC allows junior handlers to be younger than 9.

I have no idea. Maybe if she starts practicing now, she will be ready by the time she is 9. Also, I'm sure she could probably compete in sanction matches before she was 9.

Good luck!

Thanks for the info, I'll look into both the UKC and the sanction matches. Gunnar's breeder is willing to begin teaching my daughter and we'll be attending some of the local shows as spectators. Will keep you posted.

Update: Wow! Can't believe UKC minimum age is 2. http://www.ukcdogs.com/dogevents/rules/j-index.shtml That's almost difficult to imagine particularly because I have a two year old
