Question BIS? Dumb question ?

*I did a search first! Nothing came up!*

I was looking up pedigrees tonight and came across a sire with BIS/BISS at the beginning and (SOM) at the end.

Does 'BIS' mean Best in Show? Whats 'BISS' - Best in Specialty Show?

I *assume* that 'SOM' stands for Sire of Merit?

Told ya they were dumb questions.

Thanks in advance.

No, they're not dumb questions. I had the same ones myself. But you got them all right! Good for you "Sire of Merit" means they have directly sired more than 6 AKC champions. Pretty big honor to accomplish that!

Christina, that threw me, too - I've only heard it as "7 or more," but I suppose that's the same as "more than 6," isn't it?

Ahhh - thanks so much for the education!

I've been researching all this showing and pedigree stuff, and I'm kinda a knowledge hound, so while it may be a few years before I can actually own a show dog - I want to learn all I can in the meantime!

And I'm going to hijack my own thread - but I have been thinking about training Mackenzie to prepare for AKC Obedience titles. I've done some research on this, and am trying to find a local training club to prepare for it. Do either of you do Obedience in addition to confirmation ?(I hope I used the right language!)

Heeheee - it is a fair statement, but I like to have the 7 being boldly stated. Genie (Scrapper's mom) knows how proud I am of that.

As I said before, I am tad biased in this dept kingicon
Oops, sorry I accidentally caused that little confusion. Your way IS more direct. You're right, Christina, I sure do know how proud you are of that "7 or more." kingicon

I too hope to own a show dogs someday. For now I have two pets I do obedience and agility with both my dogs. Bru has been in 2 shows and we are planning to show again in Feb. Amaya is just getting started and I am hoping to enter her in a local show in June.

The AKC website has a place to search for obedience clubs. You may also want to check UKC. We are currently training at a club that is officially UKC sanctioned.

I love the show obedience and agility. My dogs love to work I tell my fellow boxer club folks that my dogs may not be the prettiest boxers but they are smart

I haven't done a lot of formal obedience training - primarily because it's hard to find clubs that will accept my dogs without demanding proof of vaccination (which I don't do). So, I'm puttering around with it on my own, and having a lot of fun! I'm not sure we'll ever be ring-worthy (and I'm not sure I'm all that interested in it), but we're enjoying it, and that's what counts!
