Advice for a Novice :)

As stated in my Intro thread, I am very intersted in becoming a Junior Handler. I know that raising and showing dogs is a huge responsibility and I would like to know if anyone has advice for a newcomer. I would like to show Boxers, of course! I am not new to the breed and I often watch dog shows, but I am new to the whole 'training for show' and such. I've read the Breed Standards a few times on the American Kennel Club website. Now I would like useful advice for a Junior Handler and/or someone wanting to become one. Thanks a bunch!

I think the best advice for you is to find conformation classes, and practice and practice. There really a big difference in a well handled dog, and one that isn't. A good hand is acquired through repetition.

As a junior handler, the handler is being judged, not the dog, so keep working at it and you will do great.

If you can not find any breed handling or conformation classes to take, see if you can find a good handler in your area that might mentor you.

Thanks for the input guys! Means alot.

We're still looking for puppies but I don't want to get one too soon. I want to be able to spend as much time with him/her as needed.

Not sure of the actual rules in the US for Junior Handlers are however, a great resource that we used when starting out was Born to Win Breed to Succeed by Patricia Craige.

You have also been given great advice in that it is the handler that is being judged and your knowledge of the breed. To gain knowledge about the breed we would recommend books such as Boxer Blarney by Fairbrother Thompson and The Boxer by John Wagner. These are not new publications by any stretch of the imagination but they are detailed and comprehensive.
