Question Bitch in heat and surgery?

How long are they in heat for? And Sequoia, my white female, has to have surgery to have lower canine removed, due to breaking. Seems I read somewhere that a female in heat should not go into surgery? True or False?
And also heard somewhere that if in heat, they should not be spayed until they are over that heat. Is this true? I haven't had time to research it, but I'd sure like to know before allowing them to do surgery on her.
Thanks!

Karen

I've read that there is a chance of hemorrhage with doing a spay while in heat so it is recommended to wait. A bitch is usually in heat for somewhere between 21-28 days after she starts to bleed.
I am not so sure about having another surgery performed while in heat...hopefully someone can answer that for ya.

Thank you.. OH MY WORD!!!! that's a long time! *flinch* Someone said about 2 wks.. I thought THAT was bad! *groannnnn* lol Now I know that TaTanka is going in for surgery for his tooth and neuter FIRST!! *egad*
I will definately try to wait on her surgery if it's dangerous... just not sure how this canine tooth she broke off will hold up.. and worry about infection, yet don't think keeping her on antibiotics is so healthy. Frustrating when you don't know quite what to do! Will do more research and wait to see if any of you have any opinions or suggestions.
Wish I had just had her spayed earlier.. but was always told that they should go through one heat before spaying.. Wonder if that is true?? Am sure some of you know or have opinions on this?

I just posted this thread about the long term health risks of spaying and neutering.
