Help! Need a great Cookie Recipe!

I am searching for the ultimate rolled sugar (or butter) cookie recipe, the kind you can cut into different shapes and decorate with icing. I've tried many (Southern Living cookbooks, Good Housekeeping Cookbooks, etc.), but have yet to come up with that one terrific cookie. Most of the ones I've made are either a) too dry/crumbly, b) too bland tasting or c) BOTH!

Does anyone have a terrific recipe for a rolled cookie dough that is both moist (chewy) and tasty? Many thanks!

Talking Cookie Monster Sugar Cookies

This recipe came from and old Sesame Street book my sister and I had when we were little. We always had so much fun helping our mom make these and then decorate them before baking. They're yummy too!

Cookie Monster Sugar Cookies

3/4 cups butter
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
2 1/2 cups self-rising flour

Mix sugar and butter. Stir in eggs, vanilla, and flour. Chill dough.

Roll out, and cut into fun shapes. Decorate with food coloring or sprinkles, if desired. Bake at 400 degrees for 6-8 minutes.

Wow Heather your recipe is much simpler than mine

OK I lied I got this recipe off a bag of sugar not off a box of butter. They do take some work but they are sooooo worth it!

1 Cup butter softened (I don't think it matters if you use salted or unsalted)

3/4 Cup fimly packed light brown sugar

3/4 Cup granulated sugar

2 eggs

2 tablespoons milk

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

4 Cups all purpose flour

2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder

1 teaspoon salt

Cream the butter and both sugars together in large bowl until light and fluffy. Add eggs, milk and vanilla and beat well. Stir together flour, baking powder and salt in small bowl. Gradually add flour mix to the sugar mixture. Cover and refrigerate dough for 3-4 hours. Preheat oven to 375*. Roll out half of dough at a time, to 1/8 inch thickness. Cut into fun shapes Bake on ungreased cookie sheet and enjoy!

* I never bake cookies at 375 as a general rule. I would rather have cookies take a little longer to bake than to have them be able to burn quicker LOL That is your call

Then just make your icing out of powdered sugar and milk and whatever color food coloring you would like. Good luck! I love these cookies!
