New pup & going back to work

Hi, we got an 8-week-old puppy on Friday night. Both my husband and I have to go to work on Monday morning so we're trying to figure out what we should do when we're not home. We have a three-year-old boxer at home, too. Tiesto and puppy get along really well so are we okay with leaving both of them in the backyard together? Or should we leave the puppy inside the house? We bought a good-sized pen so we've been putting the pup in that at night so we'd put him in the pen during the day. If we leave him in the house, what do we need? A radio, warm water bottle, etc? Thanks!!!

When I brought my puppy home I tried to give myself at least 3 weeks before I went back to both jobs.

At 8 weeks, I would NOT leave a puppy outside all day. Boxers are not ment to be an outside dog anyway. I would recommend creating your new puppy until you can come home to let him/her out to potty. Do you know anyone that would be willing to let the puppy out every so often? I usually leave the radio on for Solomon and when he was that little he was given a blanket and a large stuffie that he would always curl up with and go to sleep on. That helped him with the transition of of living with me and not with his littermates.

DEFINITELY do NOT leave a puppy outside all day. There is no telling what might happen. He could get hurt while playing with your other dog, eat something that makes him sick, or escape through a tiny hole that you didn't even know was there.

If you have a pen, put him in there with a dish of water or a water bottle (the kind that attaches to the side of a crate -- less messy than a dish), a bed, a few safe toys (nothing that he can chew to bits and swallow pieces of), and an area of newspaper so that he can go to the bathroom.

I'm assuming this pen is inside.... if not, then set up an area inside like the one I've described above.

Are both of these dogs "outside dogs"?? Boxers are not fit for outdoor living for lots of reasons....

Please don't leave either of them outside alone for that amount of time....I have a 2 year old and 9 month old and I can't imagine leaving them unattended outside for even an hour....there is too much to get into for them to get injured in some way...when we leave they go into their crates...its the only time we crate them, but they actually like it and even go in and sit down when they know we are getting ready to go..they know the routine and I have peace of mind that they are ok while I'm gone...

We also have an 8 week old boxer and luckily i can be home with him four days a week but when i am at work i am gone for 48hrs and if my wife is in school she is gone from about 7am until about 5pm.. on those days we put him in our kitchen in a baby pen with blankets, toys, food, and a pee pad at the opposite end...

99% of the time we have someone we know who also has a boxer come and let him out @ 930, 1230, and 330 and he seems to do reasonably well. We also as stated above will leave the tv on so he doesn't feel so alone.. so far we've only not been able to let him out once and i haven't seemed to see a problem with him, but i wouldn't recommend doing that on even a semi- regular basis if at all possible until he is old enough to stay in his crate and hold his bladder for most of the day.

hope this helps

I know boxers are goofy but what is in your yard that is so dangerous :-)

ANYTHING. Just 2 weeks ago I had to take Creek in to the vet (not my vet, the NEAREST vet) because I found her out in the yard, leaning up against the fence in the driving rain. She refused to come inside, and she was wheezing. I had no idea what had happened to her. Turns out that in the 20 minutes I left her alone she went out the dog door and got into the grill outside -- the drip tray had rusted out and a huge pile of greasy charcoal and old food bits had fallen to the ground (didn't realize this until after we got back from the vet and I found several piles of regurgitated charcoal in the yard).

Caney has laid in an ant bed before. If I had not been home, and especially if she'd had an allergic reaction, she would have been in big trouble.

Bees and wasps can also sting and cause a dangerous allergic reaction while you're gone.

Boxers ARE known for allergies you know....

Like stated above anything can be dangerous to our boxers. Even things that we wouldn't even think of.

Just a few weeks ago, Solomon was stung by a bee. He developed hives, throat stated to close off, heart was racing and so forth. We didn't have time to rush him to our vet, so we had no other choice but to take him to the ER vet. From this point on he is only outside with supervision and Benadry is never to far away!

As others have stated there are bees, wasps, mosquitos, ants, there are also rocks, dirt, and grass, which many dogs will eat all three things and either become sick or have it become an obstruction, there's feces which many pups go through a phase of eating feces which isn't exactly healthy, I've had my dog try to eat sticks before, there are air conditioning/heating units in back yards many times which can be chewed and become dangerous or a puppy can get stuck near them, many people have BBQ's, if you have a wooden fence a bored Boxer can destroy a wooden fence without a second thought, puppies can dig out (you'd be AMAZED at what they can fit through!), grown dogs can dig or jump, Boxers are also the #1 STOLEN dog in most of the states in the USA and can very easily have someone break into your yard and steal your dogs, especially a puppy that would EASILY be worth $500+ if someone wanted to steal it to sell it to someone else and make a quick buck. Then there are just plain mean people who open backyard gates for the sole purpose of simply letting your dog(s) out so you don't have them anymore. Really, the possibilities are absolutely ENDLESS.

Not to mention it's SUMMER it's HOT and Boxers are NOT dogs that do well with either cold or hot days and it's allergy season which many Boxers have allergies. Pets should NEVER ben left in a yard unattended for any length of time, it simply isn't safe. A grown dog has the mentality of about a 3 year old human child, would you leave your 3 year old human child in the backyard alone? Of course not. Shouldn't with your dog either. Either keep them in the house in a crate, pen, whatever, but definitely NOT outside.
