Bathing
When is it ok to start bathing Venus? She is 6 weeks. I read in other threads that flea meds aren't good, but what about regular shampoos? Would it be better to just use water?
Thanks!

It's fine to bathe her with a mild shampoo, like oatmeal shampoo for dogs. I've even heard that mild dish detergents are fine to use. Just no flea treatments or anything medicated.

It would be fine to bathe her, just don't do it very often. Once a month is more than enough in most cases (unless she gets into something she shouldn't). Use a very mild shampoo. I wouldn't use dish soap, it can be drying, I would stick to soap made for sensitive skin or puppies that are non drying.

Bathing too often will tend to dry their skin out (remove necessary oils). I don't bathe mine but once every three months. In between baths, I use baby wipes.

I have never given SuzyQ a bath. I don't find that she has a bad odor, she has never had fleas that weren't controlled right away with treatment. She is not one to roll in icky stuff, so we are lucky there. I have wiped her feet/legs/underside with a damp washcloth if she has gotten a little muddy. I guess that we just haven't seen that she was in need of a bath. I don't know of any reason that dogs really need to be bathed if they are not getting very dirty or rolling in smelly stuff. Just my 2 cents.

I ordered a gallon of oatmeal shampoo for my sharpei mix and use it on my boxer. It's awesome for not drying the skin and her fur is so smooth and soft after a bath. It also doesnt remove too much of her natural oils which is so important to a boxer's skin. I only bathe Lily with soap about 2-3 times a year so far. In betweens are just warm water and lots of massage. Hate washing off that puppy smell.
One thing to add to all bathers, if you use a real shammy, not those synthetic ones, right after the bath to dry the boxer, their coats get super and I mean super-duper shiney and smooth. The more you wipe, the shinier it gets. Hehe, guess I wax-wipe my Lily like a good ole' coupe! LOL

Lilylarue, that tip about using a chamois is pure gold, thank you! Do people out there recommend baby shampoo for dogs perhaps? I've never seen an oatmeal shampoo here, but then again, I haven't been looking very hard up to now... ;o)

Oatmeal Shampoo
I ordered it from that really huge dog site with the simple name. I dont remember if we can list the site names here or not. If ya email me here, I can tell you.
It smells very nice too, like cinnamon. Makes me sleepy after bath time.
"Wax on-wax off"! What a hoot!!! Thanks for the first morning giggle!
