Question BW's newest barfer

Okay, prepare for BoxerWorld's newest barfer! I'll be asking tons of questions, you know I've been reading the BARF forums for ages, there's just so much to process! Buddy will get his first barf meal for supper tonight. It will be chicken necks. Don't let me screw up, so in case there's anything I missed reading, feel free to tell me From what I've read, Buddy being six months old, he should get 5-6% of his weight daily, right? He eats 2 meals, so that means @ 3% per meal, right? And I only feed him chicken for about a week, then add in veggies and other stuff, right? Not all at once? I haven't opened the pack of chicken necks yet, so I don't even know what they look like, but I just give him the whole thing? I know you guys are used to doing this, but I can't help but worry he'll choke. Reassure me What do you who grind bones use to grind them? I may go that route, I haven't decided yet, I'll see how he does tonight. Oh, I should add one tablespoon pumpkin also for the runs? I think I read that somewhere. Sorry for all the questions, I've just read so much it's starting to blur together! I don't want to mess up, and today's the day! So I'm just covering all my bases! Thanks in advance for all the help! And you can all consider yourselves as having one more convert, because it's because of all the good stuff you guys have posted about barf that I decided to do this

YaY!!!! for you and Buddy!

Brandi what time are you going to be giving Buddy his supper? I can meet you in chat and talk you through the first meal if you are a little nervous

It might take Buddy a while to figure out what the heck to do with those things and he might take off running So be prepared for that. He also might gag the neck back up and if he does just let him go and eat it again. Scary at first but you should have no worries. Make sure the necks are room temp so that they are easier for his little jaw to handle. Also don't be surprised if he backs away from the necks after a few days, his jaw might need a rest

He might not have the runs but he will have super mucousy poo and it isn't pretty to look at Rocks had that and goopy eyes for a few weeks and all was well.

I don't grind cause I want Rocks to work for his food and it gives his jaw good exercise. And keeps his teeth all white and pretty

Where did you get your necks? I still need to run to the Winn Dixie here and see if they can get some for me.

The chat idea is great Andie, I was thinking I would slip in tonight! I'm sure that would be a tremendous help, having someone to talk me through it! What time will you be in there? I usually feed him his supper around 6-7. I got my necks at WD, .59 lb., but I'm heading to your Sam's Club today to see what I can get I remember you saying they had some good deals too

OK< I can meet you in chat at about 6:30 tonight How does that sound?

I get all of Rocks meat at Sam's. The wings used to be .77 / lb but they uped it to .99/ lb You can also buy meat by the case. I get his muscle meat there as well because you can buy the beef in bulk and it lasts forever!

That's what I want to do, buy it in bulk. I have a huge deep freezer, so that's no problem. I'll talk to ya tonight!

Buddy's loving his new diet We've had three meals now, and he has gulped each meal down within 10 minutes! And afterwards, he's looking for more! I haven't seen any diahrea yet (knock on wood). Haven't even had any choking scares yet. It's like he was meant to be eating this. I'm so glad his change-over is going so well

Thumbs up

I am currently considering the change to a Barf diet for my 13 week old boxer and my adult retrievers. I have found some great tips on here but I also searched the web and found so many great sites dedicated to the "Bones and Raw Food" diet. One is www.barfers.com.... I just typed in my search engine Barf diet and found many interesting and informative sites. One has the top 50 frequently asked questions from new barfers (very informative!)
