FISH.. Questions...

Ok. I KNOW there is info on here, I remember reading it before, and probably even posting about it! *grumbles* But.. I can't find it.. And I need some answers.
1. How often can fish be fed?
2. Are there any kinds of fish that should not be fed?
(seems I remember reading about diff. levels of mercury etc? )
3. When raw, can they eat bones and all, and also if giving the whole fish, should I remove the fins & scales?
4. Should skin be removed?
5. Sequoia didn't seem to want to eat the raw, so I nuked it! (microwave) THEN she ate it.. but.. is it healthier if eaten raw? Plus if cooked, then I'm guessing bones should be removed???

I was given a LARGE amount of Alaskan cod in my freezer. A man went to Alaska (from here in Az) and caught a big cod, and had it all dressed. It doesn't even really look freezer burned.
And I just recently was given two coolers full of striped bass, some of it is freezer burned.. some of it is filet'd and other is whole fish.
Just need to know these answers, as I am about to share some of this fish with a friend of mine that has 5-6 boxers and feeds raw too.

Thanks so much! Sorry If I've repeated a thread anywhere, but I just could not find the info I needed to know!

Question

*awwwww* Does anyone have an answer on the Alaskan Cod? I really need to know, as I planned on taking a bunch of it that I have to a friend who has boxers tomorrow, and its about a hour drive from here, so would like to do this with confidence that it is OK to feed Cod.
I've just tried to research through google, BUT.. I TRUST ALL OF YOU HERE before I'd ever trust anyone else's opinions!
So please, if you know?? Let me know? I have searched Cod fish here in BW.. but don't pull anything up.. I can't imagine someone hasn't mentioned it before?
Thanks again..

K<~~w/b peekin' in to find out for sure

fish

We feed Twiggy our 14 month old boxer fish on occasion. She eats them whole. I know you have to be careful with some whole fish as the back fins can be pointy and even have a bit of toxin in them, but that is remedied by cutting them off with kitchen shears. I would feed my dog cod....

Thanks Zak.. I appreciate your input... I have fed them some, but was hoping I'd get a little input before continuing to do so...

Have a good day!

Karen<~~thinking that somewhere online there must be more info. but prefers our first hand replies from BW members that have answers.. Funny how I trust all in BW more than anything else! LOL!

You could make this real easy by feeding canned mackerel. It has skin, and bone, but it is steamed, so the entire fish is safe to feed.

The dogs love it, and it is very very good for them.

We feed it at least every other week. But in the winter when the weather is dry we feed weekly.

Hi Marylou....
Yeah.. I've always fed Canned Mackerel, but when this man I know gave me a huge amount of Alaskan Cod that he went there and caught.. had it specially cut & packaged, I just was hoping I could make use of it.. So it still is in my freezer, and I did feed them a little bit when I first got it, but then thought I should find out more.. AND we have a fish hatchery nearby.. so they have LOTS of free fish!
Am going to pick up 30-40lbs of Ground Elk on thurs. My two do really great with it! Am thankful to the hunters in the area that we get it from! Such a blessing!

Sorry, I didn't see your original post as I have been having computer problems.

The only fish that you need to worry about is Salmon. They can get a fluke that can make your dog very sick. I understand that if the salmon is frozen for at least 30 days at below 0 degrees F. it is okay. Personally, I have only fed salmon when it is cooked.

Cod is just fine!

AWESOME Jan! Thanks sooooo much! I rarely ever feed Salmon either.. I think only when they didn't have the canned Mackerel in stock.. I'm so pleased to know about the Cod! Because these are such nice BIG chunks, like 6x6 fillets... What about the skin? I was removing it, but then thought.. "Wait a minute, maybe it has nutritional value!??" Do you know anything about that?

I have no idea if the skin has any nutritional value, but I certainly wouldn't remove it as long as your dogs will eat it.

OMG Karen, I see what you mean, wow, fresh fish is the best. I had friends that pressure cooked fresh fish, could you do that? Then the bones are so soft, the dogs can eat them, like the canned mackerel.

You could also take it off the bone and can it. or pre-package and freeze it, then just pop them out of the freezer when you need them...
