Question Help! He swallowed a leg bone! (its our first feeding)

So I gave Cassius & Laila their first meal of RAW just now......and Cassius swallowed the chicken thighs! Is this ok??? Will the bone come out whole? What if it gets stuck?? What do I do next feeding? Laila is still eating hers, like a proper lady.........Ahhhhh I'm scared!!!

Sorry, I don't have any experience with this, but if you do a general search and use "swallowed chicken bone" in the keyword field, you will find threads that contain that info. I don't think it's anything to worry about, but for your own peace of mind, it's always good to read others' experience.

Just what Gruntsmom said -- I'm sure you will find MANY other threads concerning the same topic, and in those cases everything came out OK

It's hard to watch when you start feeding raw, but you get used to it!

If it is only thighs, then there really should not be a problem. These are still small bones we're talking about, and thighs don't have any interesting corners that could possibly result in the food getting stuck in the throat.

Dogs really don't chew their food unless they have to. And when they do have to, it usually means just a few crunches, enough to break any joints and enable the dog to swallow the item. If you feed small parts that can be swallowed whole, then they'll swallow them whole. In the short term (at least) you would probably be wiser to be feeding this dog larger parts that he must learn to chew before swallowing (but don't ever expect him to chew it up to mush like we chew up food - he hasn't got the dentition to allow it anyway). To help him to get the idea, try feeding things that are big enough for you to hold onto an end of, if necessary, without getting your fingers munched. For example, whole leg quarters.

Big Mahalo!!

I will go get him some quarters today. The problem is.....we live on an island, and there really aren't very many options as far as animal 'parts'. For example, the chicken in the grocery store comes to the store already packed from the mainland. So the butchers don't have carcasses or necks ect. Also, so far all I found in the way of whole chicken, is grocery stores and Costco. It is way too expensive to buy from those places.......so that is the reason I bought thighs with bone in from Costco cos it was a large bag for 9 dollars.
