green tripe

I have a friend who will be slaughtering a cow soon. I have asked him to save me the tounge, and anything else that humans may not find too tasty. I have been reading about green tripe. As I have come to find, this is very beneficial for dogs. I have asked him to save it for me and I am going to freeze it for later use. tyson is doing good on his chicken, but going to give him another week or so on it before adding another protien. My question is, how do I feed this to him? I have no knowledge on this at all. Just cut it (if possible) or do I grind it up? I know you are to give him the contents in the stomach also. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Also what all would be good to give him? Testicles, penis, just want to score as much free food that I can. Being that humans usually don't eat this part, I won't feel guilty asking for it. Also, what type of raw meaty bone would be good for him to eat?
Thanks again

I grind my tripe only cause its easier and I usually get about 10 at a time , you can get the heart, liver, tongue, spleen, kidneys, lungs not sure about those other parts - someone else who's had more experience I hope will chime in. Good score

Fresh green tripe , from a human standpoint is pretty stinky and gross! You may also find it hard to cut up. It may be best if you offer it whole, and just let Tyson eat a bit at a time. Grinding it would also be okay. Yes, the nutrients are very good for dogs, but they certainly won't perish without it so don't feel it's a must.
You should ask for any and all parts of the cow that will not be used. Trim, cheek, head/brain, neck, liver, spleen, pancreas, kidney, heart, tail, anything! Penis and trachea (aka bullies, windies or moo-tubes) also make fantastic chewies! It's best to stay away from bare-naked leg bones as they're known to be tooth breakers, but whole legs are great! This way your dog can eat the meat and have a chew on the hoof, and then you can remove the naked bone. Personally, I would ask for everything the human doesn't want.

Sounds like you'll be set for a while! I tried to talk my BF into bringing home tripe on his last hunting excursion, but he wouldn't have it. I've heard it's about the smelliest, raunchiest thing in the world. I saw a picture of a Great Dane eating whole tripe on the Raw Fed Dogs site -- the dog was given the entire stomach whole and ended up eating the actual stomach but leaving the contents. It also said that the dog got an "ick" look on his face every time he accidentally got the contents in his mouth

I really want to try it soon because I know how wonderful it's supposed to be for them, but I haven't gotten around to ordering any.... Definitely let us know how you end up feeding it, and your pup's reaction -- I would love to hear

I was just curious as I said totally stupid when it comes to tripe. I may just try to give it all to him (outside) and see what happens. Hopefully they will be cleaning out their freezer too. Their cattle are out in the pasture all summer long, and there are no additives (if that is what you call it) given to them. They are 100% natural. I have known these people all my life (41yrs!!) and I know they take good care of the animals. I think they may also have goats, but not sure. Thank you for all the info. My daughter is engaged to their son, so I always know when they are going to slaughter a cow. Their family are big deer hunters too, so when deer season comes, I'll be asking for that also. With luck, I won't be needing much food from the store. I also live about 4 miles from a slaughter house, so I can always get in touch with them if I need to.
I am really excited about this. Don't know if bf is, but oh well. He still makes comments on the chicken I give Tyson. I will definately be asking for all the parts you have mentioned, maybe not the head (too gross for me).
I'll let you know how it goes when I get it all.

My BF wasn't too keen at first either. Always made comments about the chicken bones being dangerous He's gotten a lot better though. He's finally realizing that as far as the dogs' nutrition, this is as good as it gets, and he appreciates that I care so much I still want some deer tripe though

Sounds like you've hit the jackpot for meat sources! I'm jealous!

Yes, definitely give us a report on the tripe feeding!

Ya, when I told bf I was wanting some of the cow legs, he just shook his head and said I am loosing my mind But I guess when you do something new, everyone will think your crazy. I just know tyson is doing so much better on raw. His poop is so much better, doesn't stink and he has so much energy and his coat is shiny. He seems to really like it. Maybe getting tired of chicken though. He's been eating it for a week now. But one more week and I'm giving him possably some beef.
Really excited though about all the free stuff. May have to get another freezer
