Question Bruno's poop

Ok, I'm a bit stumped on Bruno (rescue stray pitbull) right now. He has been eating raw since he came here last week. He LOVES it and haven't had any problems.......except his poop. When we fed only chicken with bones, his poop is normal, firm, etc........then we (without thinking) gave him boneless pork and he had the runs really bad........and I thought I noticed a bit of red in his poop. So back to chicken with bones and his poop firmed right up and didn't notice any more red. But he started to seem like he was a bit constipated since he was having bones in both meals each day, so we went today to boneless chicken in the morning (chicken breasts) and chicken with bones in the evening. Well today BF said he had liquid poop again and it was noticeably red. Then he just had an accident in the living room and it had a little bit of red in it too.......not a ton, but a little bit and it was basically diarreah also. It seems that as soon as we go to even one boneless meal, he gets the runs and the red in his poop reappears, but if we stick with both meals having bones in them, his poop is normal but he seems a bit constipated. We can't win. Any thoughts/advice?

Also, he was given a de-wormer last week Wednesday (he tested positive for hookworms) and will have another pill in 3 weeks and then get his fecal rechecked. Could the inconsistent poop/red poop be from the hookworms and because the medicine is killing them?

And he's acting totally normal, playful, happy, and his appetite is very much there. We're feeding him aprx 2 pounds of food per day, probably a little less (we don't measure anymore).

Dogs are individuals, so could it be that he's an individual that needs some bones with every meal?

It's hard to tell what the cause was. I would go back to the chicken, with bone, until things return to normal. Then try introducing a new food type. The medicine may not be helping. If he is constipated, just add more meat to each meal, rather than having boneless meals.

Good luck!

Thanks Jan! We are going to give him some bone with his breakfast (probably a chicken wing and a chicken breast) and then give him his normal bone-in chicken meal for dinner (a chicken leg quarter probably). Hopefully this will straighten things out. It's not so fun housebreaking a pup with runny poop! GROSS! LOL!

Hey Nikki. Could the bits of blood/red in his poop just be realted to the stress he's been through lately? Or from not having a healthy digestive tract? I would guess you should just stick to bone-in meals for now until you notice the blood completely gone, but maybe add in a bit of extra meat to prevent constipation.
