raw bones

We have a 3 year old boxer boy and just got a new puppy. I have always given our boy rawhides when he is being supervised without any trouble. I know they are not best. I am wanting to switch over to raw bones now that there is a puppy running around the house trying to get the rawhides (which I know he cannot have at all). Two questions: Do I just go to my local grocery store and ask for raw bones? Also, are the raw bones safe for puppies too?
Thanks for any info you can offer!

Re: raw bones

yes as long as they are not cooked. a good starter would be chicken wings. you can also do chicken quarts. the rib cage of the chicken. also you can do other bones as well. for puppies i did chicken wings and watched him eat it. He may swallow it whole but this is ok. He will either regurgitate it or digest it

Re: raw bones

If you're talking about bones to chew on, not to eat, then you want soup bones - marrow or knuckle bones. They're fine for puppies, too, though marrow bones might be a bit intimidating at first! You just have to know your dog; some dogs are very strong chewers and may break a tooth, or chip off splinters of the marrow bones. (For a puppy, you could probably even give neck bones, but the older dogs would be able to eat those.)

Re: raw bones

thanks for your replies. So, I went today on a search for them. Started at Wal-Mart, they don't cut their own meat, so I went to Sam's, then Kroger, then Albertson's. None had any. They all dispose of them in chemicals or don't get them at all. I am so disappointed. I am going to try a feed store tomorrow. Any other ideas?

Re: raw bones

I agreee, got a butcher shop they order different cuts of meat. We sometimes have a hard time finding them in certain stores here too. When I do find them, i buy as many packages as they have out and I freeze them in individual packages. Some stores can order them special.

Re: raw bones

I found a butcher and am heading there on Tuesday. Both I found near me are closed on Mondays. YAY!
