Starting rescue on RAW

I would like to start Penny out on RAW like Mason. Should I just start with chicken, one meat source, only? When I switched Mason I switched cold turkey and he ate chicken for about three weeks before I introduced a new meat. Penny is already interested in what Mason is eating. Also, would it be okay to do RAW for one meal and kibble in the other to finish off the kibble? She is currently eating Solid Gold kibble.

Re: Starting rescue on RAW

I would probably start off with feeding just chicken for a week or so and then start adding a new meat weekly. I think it would be ok to feed one raw meal and one kibble meal, but I'd definitely feed the raw in the morning. Kibble takes a lot longer to digest so by the time morning comes around she'll be ready for her next meal. Good luck!

Does anyone think it will be too much of a change for her since she may be going in for a torn acl surgery. We find out Tuesday if they are performing surgery.

Re: Starting rescue on RAW

When I started Mason on RAW he got chicken only for a few weeks. He now gets a variety plus homecooked. Would it be okay to give Penny RAW and homecooked together the first few weeks? She is also going through a chinese herb detox due to her skin problems.

Re: Starting rescue on RAW

Penny had her first RAW meal tonight. She had a chicken quarter. I cut off all the skin and brought her outside and let her at it. She was very excited yet not sure what to do. I went to skim the pool and watch her from a distance to let her have her space. She started by trying to pull the meat off. Then licking it and moving it from place to place. She looked at me a few times and I kept telling her she was a good girl and she would go right back to it. After about 10-12 minutes she finally worked her way through it.

Hopefully this will help with the detox and get her back on track.

Re: Starting rescue on RAW

That's really cool. I remember going through that with my boys. Neither one was very sure of what to do with it, but they didn't really need much caoxing to eat it.

To answer your question on the raw / homecooking mixture, I personally don't think it would be a major issue feeding one or the other once a day for a couple of weeks. I would just be a little nervous taking her off of kibble suddenly because she'd probably end up with an upset tummy.

Good luck.

Re: Starting rescue on RAW

We did a kibble breakfast this morning. I am hoping that this is not the cause of her allergies. She is eating Solid Gold Hund-a-flocken. There isn't too much left. We will keep at it and I am sure she will do great and cross our fingers the allergies start to clear up. I am also using a calenula tea to help ease the itching. I started that last night too and that seemed to help. She did not keep us up itching all night.

Re: Starting rescue on RAW

Penny has allergies and we are not sure to what, food vs environment. She has had them since she came to live with us. I started her on chicken last week and the vet also started her on some chinese herbs to help her detox. However, the itching continues. How long should it be before we see some relief if chicken is not one of the culprits?

P.S. I should add that she is still receiving kibble in the morning and that might also be contributing to the allergies. She is eating Solid Gold Hund-a-Flocken.
