Introducing new boxer pup to old terrier

After talking to a herd of breeders we found a reputable breeder that we liked with some young females. We are going to check the girls out sunday and she can be taken home the day after thanksgiving.Ill put up some pics.We can hardly wait but we have a few concerns reguarding our existing dog.

I found our mix terrier, sarah, on the road 7 years ago and her and Rockne tolerated each other.Rock was 5yrs old at the time of introduction. Rock loved her but she didnt want anything to do with him and he learned to just let her be. When rock played rough with his toys or me sarah just took off under the bed or to the high gound on the back of the couch. She is fixed and the new pup will be spayed as soon as the vet says its ok.

Im looking for advice on how to introduce these dogs and if having 2 spayed females will cause any trouble. They will not be alone unsupervised.Im hoping sarah will be more accepting of the pup since they will be colse to the same size for a little while.

I'd also go with a male.. There might not appear to be any problems when you bring the female home and not saying there will be but when she matures at about 1-2 years, There might be fighting. It's actually quite common with Boxer females so that's something to consider.

If a problem should come up are you willing to keep them seperated? Or if it's bad enough are you willing to give one of them up in hopes of them having a better life? There are a lot of what ifs specially with female combos.

As sgbtab said, She'll probably be more accepting of a puppy than she was with Rockne since he was already mature and probably a horse compared to her.. lol. You'd be surprised at how many 'old grumps' turn into big softies with little puppies around.

my experiences

I have a 5 year old scottish terrier and a 3 year old boxer, both females. They met when the terrier was 2 and the boxer just a pup. The two have done really well together and rarely fight(the terrier is quite grumpy). The terrier mostly ignores our boxer. This thanksgiving our terrier met my sister's boxer boy and bit him first thing. She did not like him at all, and I am assuming it was because he was male because she did fine with our boxer when she was a pup.

However, that is just our situation I have heard of a lot of females not getting along. So, I don't know if that necessarily helped but that is my experience. Perhaps you should try taking your terrier to a dog park or a doggie day care to test her out around other dogs.

Best of luck

terriers with a boxer puppy

I introduced my 1st Boxer pup to 2 female (spayed) toy fox terriers, 1 is 9 yrs old the other 7. One has always been a real pain and the other friendly. My female boxer just learned the ropes. My alpha (6 lb of pure fire) put her in her place and let her know what was acceptable from day 1. Now Maggie is 9 mo. old and they all are doing well together :-)

Our noodle is the only female we have and she keeps the boys in there place. We recently dog-sat for a friend for a week and it was a female mixed thing, very playful and energetic. Boys loved her, she was all up for playing. Noodle made a scene a few times but surprised me when she finally let her join the pack. I would go with a male myself if i was to add another but you may be surprised with another female it may just take a little time and energy to get along together. Being a boxer owner i know you have some

When introducing a new pup to an older existing dog I think it all depends on the older dogs personality & temperament.
Tuppence (female) will be the ripe old age of 18 years old in March and Lola (she was 9 weeks when we got her) is now 10 months old. I had no worries about getting a puppy with Tuppence as she is such a passive, friendly old girl and always has been. We made sure to always let Tups know she was our star and never let anyone leave her out when they came to see the new puppy.
Lola is quite dominant and Tups is fine with that. I would eventually like to get another boxer in probably a years time but know that it will have to be male as Lola most probably wouldn't accept another female being so dominant herself.
