Feeding My 13 week old
I was wondering if anyone out there has some suggestions on feeding my 13 wk old pup. He was originally on Diamond Lamb and Rice but didn't seem to like it that much and wasn't eating as much as he should. I then tried Canidae but he doesnt really seem that interested in that either. Its funny because he seems to eat anything else he can get his mouth on. (Bugs, sticks, food crumbs and cat food??), but doesnt want to eat his own food. Can anyone recommend a food to try? Hes 13 wks and weighs only 14.5 lbs should I be worried he seems so small.

My pup weighed 15.4 pounds at ten weeks old...I'm guessing he's about 20 pounds now at 12 weeks. But, like was said, weight varies depending on the dog. I feed my pup Wellness Super 5 Puppy Mix, and he seems to like it a lot. He scarfs it down when I put it down. It can be too rich for some dogs, but you could try it out and see how your pup does on it.

My puppy is 13 weeks and weighs 23.5 lbs. When we first brought her home we were feeding her 3 times a day. She didn't eat her afternoon meal so after consulting with our vet, we've reduced her to 2 times per day. She eats straight (chicken and rice) kibble @ 3 cups a day.
Now she seems to gobble up her two meals and still seems hungry. She acts fine and looks great but we're wondering if anyone has knowledge or opinion regarding the 2 verses 3 times per day feedings.
Thanks for any help you can offer.

You might want to "jazz" up the food a bit; with a good quality canned food, or a little cottage cheese or yogurt. They usually gobble that right up. I wouldn't worry about them getting too fat at this stage; Scrapper still has free access to his kibble whenever he wants it. His breakfast is where I add all the goodies; vitamins, etc.

A lot of puppies don't seem to like puppy formulas much - have you tried her on an adult or an all-life-stages food? Moistening the kibble with a little water, or as has been suggested, adding other goodies like cottage cheese, egg, yogurt or raw meat can make a big difference to a puppy's willingness to eat (it's good for them too ).
Providing you can get him to eat a reasonable amount, and he's otherwise healthy and playful, I wouldn't be worried about him being a little small at this stage. Puppy size and weight varies enormously, especially as babies - what matters is that each individual pup looks a good weight for its size (neither too thin nor too fat).
Laceysmom: IMO your puppy is much better off with at least three meals a day at her age. She's just a baby, and the time between meals if she's only fed twice a day is a bit too much for such a young puppy. Reducing to 2 meals a day is best done when your puppy is over 5 months old. Obviously, if she just won't eat it, then 2 meals will have to do - but puppies are notorious for becoming picky eaters in stages. They tend to grow in spurts, and the amount of food they need varies with those spurts - for a couple of weeks they may be eating everything in sight, then they go through a short period of disinterest. It could just be that your little girl was going through a disinterest period, but would welcome the third meal now. Worth trying her on it anyway.

The breeder had Owen (13.5 weeks now) on Yukonuba and he barely touched it, then I switched him to Chicken Soup (slowly) and he loves it - though I think he likes the added goodies added to the kibble, like everyone mentions. He gets fed 3x a day, about 1 cup each meal. I've been giving him about 75% kibble and 25% other goodies. I'm starting to homecook so I've been mixing that with the kibble.
Good luck.

If you want to feed yogurt, buy the plain, non-fat kind and add about a tablespoon to his food once a day. It doesn't work well with all dogs though. I tried giving it to my pup and it made his stools much softer, so I stopped giving it to him. I might try again when he's a little older.

13 week old pup
it was very helpful reading your question and all the reply's. i have a 13 week old female. she only weighs 11 pounds. make sure that he had all of his shots and a stool sample to make sure there is not another reason why he is so small. reading other people's reply's i think that you and i both have much smaller dogs then others. good luck on the weight gain!

I guess I should consider myself lucky since my boy is 13 weeks old and weighs 29lbs. The thing is that he eats well but not a whole lot. He's not incredibily tall or fat, he's just very heavy boned and has big paws. At times he wont eat all his food so I mix in a few spoonfulls of canned food, that usually gets him going. Lot's of luck!

He is all legs right now.

Feeding Puppy
Hi, we are newbies to BW. We have an 9-week old female Boxer named "Abbey" and we are presently feeding her Solid Gold for Puppies and she really likes it. We purchased it at a store near us called Crunchies. We also have a 9-year-old Lab who we feed Innova for Seniors and he just loves it (Labs are very easy to please). But Abbey really enjoys her food. Does anyone out there feed their puppies Solid Gold?
Good Luck,
Abbey's Mom
