Unhappy When it's time to say goodbye

I found this poem after I had to say goodbye to my first boxer boy Champ, just a few days before his 11th birthday. Champ had liver cancer and he was so very sick but helping him to the bridge was the hardest thing I ever had to do. This poem really gave me comfort in the months that followed.

A Dog's Prayer

If it should be that I grow weak,
and pain should keep me from my sleep
Then you must do what must be done,
For this last battle cannot be won.

You will be sad, I understand;
Don't let your grief then stay your hand,
For this day more than all the rest,
Your love for me must stand the test.

We've had so many happy years,
What is to come can hold no fears,
You'd not want me to suffer so,
The time has come, please let me go.

Take me where my need they'll tend,
And please stay with me until the end,
Hold me firm and speak to me,
Until my eyes no longer see.

I know in time that you will see,
The kindness that you did for me,
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I've been saved.

Please do not grieve, it must be you,
Who had this painful thing to do,
We've been so close, we two, these years,
Don't let you heart hold back its tears.

Unhappy Boxer Lover but Computer Stupid

I just got done reading that poem and it made me cry!!!! My Romeo is just 2 and I fear losing him already!! I hear stories of people losing their boxers at the same age as mine but I don't know if I can handle it. He is like
a second child to me!!!

Thank you for sharing such a beautiful poem. It brings tears to my eyes. I dread the day that my husband and I will have to make that decision -- I hope that it is not for years to come. Reading these poems is sad but comforting.

Okay, I knew I shouldn't have read this! I bawled my eyes out, what a beautiful poem.
Luckily, I work from home so no one can see me!

Lovely poem....

I am so so glad I am not in the situation where I need it right now, but I know it must bring comfort to so many people.

Thanks for sharing
