Which point and shoot camera?

I was going to purchase the Canon XSI because I love taking action shots of Zeus but then decided against it because I would much rather purchase a good point and shoot camera that I can carry around with me. I've been reading reviews all day on Canon, Nikon, Panasonic, etc., and am totally confused because they all have their pros and cons. So....what are your personal recommendations for a good point and shot?

I was given the Canon Powershot SD1100IS for Christmas and I LOVE it.
We also have the Canon EOS 40D and yes takes great shots, but it is heavy. I wanted something small & light to fit in my bag, take to the beach etc.

I am very happy with the Powershot.

Good luck with your search.

Thanks for responding. I was actually looking at that particular camera. How does that camera perform with taking action shots of pets?

I think it does quite well - obviously not as good as the large SLR cameras on action mode.

I will try to post some pics so you can see for yourself.

Let's see if these work!!

Those are impressive pictures! Thanks so much for posting them. I have a couple of pictures of Zeus running with his tongue hanging out and ears flapping in the wind. Too funny!

I have a Canon SD900 that I bought the first week we brought Caney home as a puppy. I LOVE that little camera! When I bought it I also was looking for something that I could carry around in my purse "just in case," as well as something that would take good action shots of my new little bundle of joy Being able to carry it in my purse also makes it easy for me to show off pictures of my babies to anyone, anywhere, without having to access the internet The size of the camera is also GREAT for traveling when you want a camera that won't weigh you down. I also use it a lot for taking videos.

A friend of mine got a Nikon Coolpix for Christmas and wasn't too happy with it, she ended up returning it and getting a Canon SD1100, which she absolutely loves.

Thanks for your responses. They are very helpful. So far Canon is in the lead. I plan to go to the store this week to hold cameras in my hand for fit and will then do more research and decide.

Do have a look at the focal length offered by compact cameras. Many/most of them have (what I think is) a pretty useless range. The canon you're looking at, for example, is an effective 38-114 mm. IMO that seriously limits its usefulness. Have had one compact with a range like that. I will never have another

There are others available that have a much wider angle (good - even essential - if you want to take photos indoors, where it's not always possible to back up enough to get everything in your shot). Likewise, it is possible to get a much greater telephoto end.

I went to a photo store today specifically to look at the Nikon Coolpix P90 Digital Camera w/ 12.1 Megapixels, 24x Optical VR Nikkor Wide-Angle Lens, and a 3" LCD Screen but it was out of stock. They said they can't keep them in stock. I fooled around with the P80 and loved it but am going to wait for the P90. Any opinions on this particular camera?

The Nikon Coolpix P90 is not exactly a "point and shoot camera", it is a "bridge" camera, something that does everything decently but not perfectly. It is a compromise
I read good reviews about the P90 (there is one online at http://www.trustedreviews.com/digita...Coolpix-P90/p1) but is it small enough to carry around with you? I do not think it has a built in lens cap so you need to take it off everytime you want to take a photo.
I just got a Coolpix S620 because I wanted a discreet compact easy to carry everywhere and with a lens wide enough (28 - 112mm) for taking indoor photos when reviewing restaurants. Previously I was using a Sony T30 but its 38 - 114mm zoom was not wide enough for indoor photos.
The image quality is nowhere near a slr but it does well its job
Good luck finding your camera!

The S620:

It is quite small as you can see below next to my camera gear:

A Coolpix is the generic name for all Nikon digital compact cameras. You need to precise the model of Coolpix. It is like saying I replaced my Canon EOS (which one?) because its autofocus was bad and got a Nikon D700 which I absolutely love
