Question Why would you register through CKC?

Hello all,

I'm a new boxer owner and am pretty new to registering my puppy. I bought my puppy from a private owner who presented me with papers and a brochure to the CKC (Continental Kennel Club).

I've been reading posts and am starting to come under the impression that the AKC is the best choice, but the mother & father of my puppy were registered under CKC. Is it possible for me to register my pup with the AKC? If not, how is the CKC different from the AKC?

Again, I'm new to this, so any information would be helpful!

Thanks!

Mmmm. I'm afraid that the CKC (Continental, not Canadian KC) is a registry primarily used by backyard breeders, puppy mills and others who are ineligible or banned from registering dogs with the AKC...

Your puppy is eligible for AKC registration providing its parents were AKC registered, and the breeder is not a banned person.

The CKC is much less restrictive as to what dogs can be registered. They allow dogs of unknown pedigree to be registered. A CKC registered dog (without AKC registration) can be one of the many red flags that you're dealing with a backyard breeder.

You might ask the "breeder" if the parents are AKC registered. You cannot register with the AKC w/out proof of registration of both parents.

However, AKC registration doesn't mean a whole heck of a lot either. If the parents aren't being shown and haven't been tested for genetic conditions common in the breed, it doesn't matter what kind of registration they have. The registrations, AKC, CKC, whatever-KC, in these cases, are equally as worthless.

Love your puppy and don't worry about what the papers say!

Tucker was CKC only, so I never even bothered to turn in the paperwork. I never intended to breed him, so it just wasn't important to me. His father was AKC and CKC registered, but the bitch was only CKC, so the AKC wouldn't take him.
