Just curious, when they tattoo a dog, were do they tattoo it?

Ours babies have tattoos on their back leg on the upper thigh. Dont know if thats where they all get them but thats where mine are.

Well its high up on the thigh almost at the stomach so I guess its kind of in a crease so in order to see it the dog must be laying on his/her back with legs open. Does this make sense???

The inner thigh should be checked as well...some won't tattoo an ear because ears can be easily removed.

Just for info - they only tattoo the lips of race horses, not riding horses.

The horses get tattoo on the inside of the upper lip, not actually on the gums. And was stated above, its generally done on thoruoughbreds, standardbreds and other racing stock, not the average riding horse, although lot of ex-racers end up as riding horses so you may end up with a tattooed lip in the shelter.

Military Working Dogs are tattooed in the ears. I know other dogs are tattooed there too.

This was before the days of microchipping though. All 3 were done on the inner thigh and the tat info was then given to my vet and the local animal shelter with photos, should my dogs ever come up missing.
