AKC Registration Form....HELP !!
As sad as this sounds, I'm stuck on step #2, Name of Dog.
We have decided to name our puppy "Dakota". So is this what I put here? At the top of the application, the sire and dam names are listed. For example, the dam is: Becky's Little Shadow. But the breeders just called her "Shadow".
Am I just supposed to enter "Dakota" or should I put something like "Our Little Dakota".
HELP !!!

WitchDr-
You can put in there whatever you may. Some people like to come up with really long, catchy names for their dogs although they may call their dog something altogether different. Your dog's call name is Dakota, the one he/she recognizes and listens to, so if you're comfortable with this, put that on the registration form; however, if you want to have a "registered" name for your dog that is somewhat catchy or different from his/her call name, you are entitled to this as well. Dogs with long registered names are rarely called by those and their registered names usually reference the last name of the breeder, the road on which he/she was born, so on and so on. Naming your dog is a very personal matter and so I think that you should do whatever you feel most comfortable with. BTW, you have up to one year, penalty free, to register your dog from their date of birth, so their really is no considerable rush to get this done. Our girl was born last Decemeber and we recently registered her (this month) b/c we could not decide on a registered name for her. If you choose to wait to register Dakota, make certain that you put the registration form someplace safe, somewhere that you can find it b/c it costs $15 for a replacement and it's not as simple as just calling them up and requesting one. You have to write a letter as well as the breeder before you can get another form and then you pay another $15 to $32 depending on the type of registration you request. Also, make certain that you do it right the first time b/c that is an additional $15 to correct the registration. Just an FYI. Good luck and let us know what you decide.
Sincerely,
Trishia

Thanks !!
 Thanks for the help, Astoreen.
Since I have almost 10 months to think about it, I guess I should take my time and come up with something really good.
We have no intentions of ever breeding her, but it would be nice to have an AKC registered name. If for nothing else, just for sake of having one.
Thanks again.

It is customary and courteous to include the breeder's kennel name in the pup's registered name. In this case, however, it does not seem the the breeder has a kennel, so you can either come up with whatever you want, or use "Becky" or "Little" in her registered name (there is a kennel called Shadow, so you don't want to use that, at least not like "Shadow's xxx" or "xxx of Shadow" - which would imply that the dog came from Shadow Boxers.) Or, you could look at the sire's name and choose something from there (although it is not usual, and sometimes not advisable, to use the sire's kennel name). Often the name is a reflection of the sire's, however - for instance, if the sire were named xxx's Extreme Heat, the puppy might be called xxx's Heat Wave or xxx's Too Hot to Handle or something like that.

We have no intentions on breeding our girl either, in fact, she's spayed BUT we did want her to have a registered name and be listed as offspring on the pedigree with a good name. We named our girl Sattler's Astoreen of Tralee. Sattler is our last name, Astoreen is gaelic/Irish for "My little love" and Tralee (pronounced Tray-lee) is the name of the road that the breeder lives on. Their kennel name was too long to include so we just used the road. We do intend on having Madison, her call name, compete in Obedience Trials and eventually recieve her Canine Good Citizen Award and train to be a therapy dog.
Naming your dog or children for that matter is a big deal for a lot of people, so I wanted to share with you that the AKC registration was not something that HAD to be rushed. Like you said, you have ten months, so why not take your time and really put something down that you'll be happy with.
Best of luck and let us know what you decide on.

Just a Thought
Well, including the road name is definitely out, since it's County Rd 11.
However...The breeder's property name is Windy Acres, so Dakota of Windy Acres kinda has a nice ring to it.
I imagine it's customary to check with the breeder before using their name, so I will have to give them a call if this is what we decide on.
It just so happens that the sire's registered name is "Bruno of Windy Acres".
