ACA registration
Ok, so I put this off about as long as I can. Tyson needs to get registered with the American Canine Association. I would like to do this before his first birthday 1/14. We have pretty much picked out his name, Max Baer with our last names at the end.
Couple questions though:
What is the difference between the ACA and the AKC? (his parents are reg. with ACA)
We would like to get him tatooed, would we be able to "redo" his registration with the numbers from his tatooing?
Also, how far back should we get his pedigree? We definately want it, but not sure if I should get the 3,4, or 5 generation?
Thanks for the input everyone.

Actually, there is a BIG difference between AKC and ACA. The AKC is one of the oldest, most respected breed registries out there, along with the UKC (United Kennel Club) and the CKC (Canadian Kennel Club). Registries other than these that have formed more recently, such as the CKC (Continental Kennel Club), ACA, APRI, etc., are known as "sham registries" or "alternative registries." The only reason a breeder would register his/her dogs under such a registry would be if the breeder did something to be suspended or banned from the AKC, or if their dogs were not AKC registrable to begin with. The "sham" registries will register any dog (without knowing the pedigree most often), any breed (even mixed breeds), just for the money. The reason those breeders don't choose to just leave their dogs unregistered is because it looks better to potential puppy-buyers if the dogs have "papers."
Here's some more info on dog registries:

If for some reason you still want to get him registered... I'm not sure about your other questions. I couldn't find that info on their website. As far as the pedigrees though -- it's possible that they don't even exist as far back as 3 or 5 generations. It could be that
Tyson's breeder was the first to get his dogs ACA registered. My advice would be to just skip the whole thing

Thank you Caney for the advice. I did manage to find some information online about the ACA. Just us being really stupid for not checking to see if the parents were AKC or not. Hindsight is such an eye opener.
I appreciate you explaining the difference to me. I had found a different forum online that discussed the issue, but it got into a debate and was so confusing for me.
Thanks again for all your information. It is greatly appreciated.

Glad to help. I wouldn't worry about it too much -- if he's not being used for breeding, there's no real need to have him registered. We never got around to registering Caney or Creek, but they're just pets so it's not such a big deal IMO.

on another note if you are interested in competeing in AKC events (other than conformation) like agility, obedience, etc. They offer an ILP license that will give your dog a registration number to compete. You will not be able to breed or register offspring.. just compete in events.

Ya I thought the same thing. Hard lesson learnt. I wish I'd found this site before we got him. But love him anyway
I don't wasn't going to breed or compete or anything. Just wanted a dog that I could love and spoil to death. Would like to eventually check into maybe doing therapy work with him. I'd love to do that. But have to wait till he gets out of his teenage years. Still working on that!!!!
