America's pet registry

We got Bonnies application for dog registry today and it's for america's pet registry i've never heard of them. When we bought Bonnie we just assumed not ever owning a dog before that she would be registered through akc etc.. Has anybody ever heard of them? Can we regiter her for akc i don't know how this works.

Also for her name can we just put Bonnie or for the registration do you choose another name besides her called name?

Not too sure about the registration of "american". I believe akc stands for American Kennel Club. Is that possibly the same?
As for her name, it is up to you. Tyson's name is what we call him, but we will register him under a different name. That is completely your call. I'm sure someone will step in to let you know about the other part of your question.

America's Pet Registry is another one of those registries that has been set up to register puppy mill dogs, Poo crosses and unrecognized breeds like Labradoodles and the like.

You can register Bonnie however you like. If you want to give her a fancy name, go right ahead. I wonder if they would check to see if there was another dog with the same name or not.

So a purebred can be registered with the AKC and the "puppymill breeds" are registered with the other registry?

Sounds kinda like a generic registry that just wants money? Is this a legit registry? Is it worth it?

I got all my AKC stuff from my breeder so have no idea how the process would work trying to register on your own.

A purebred with AKC registered parents so the litter can be registered.

Many Other 'registries' register purebred dogs as well new crossbreeds, but frequently they are registered by breeders (/puppymill/byb) who somewhere along the line lost their AKC papers, whether they were denied at some point, or their dog doesn't have them to start with. The questionable thing is that it really isn't that hard to get AKC papers, you pretty much just have to have two parents that are AKC registered so you really have to wonder when a purebred dog doesn't have them.

A lot of people don't know the difference in papers so if they buy a dog from a pet store and are told it is a purebred with papers they don't always know that at least in the US if they are not AKC papers they basically don't count...

Thanks for clearing that up. I wondered. My girl is AKC registered. I had her spayed so won't breed her. I won't be showing her, she's knock-kneed and pigeon toed. So do the AKC papers really mean anything to me other than good references on their website?

I kinda think AKC means a whole bunch to breeders and show dogs, but not to the average family dog. Is this accurate?

Some people may argue, but to me if you are not breeding/showing or involving your dog in any other AKC event it doesn't really matter. Having said that though having a dog with AKC papers can help give you a little more faith in where it came from, or I guess it is almost the opposite; a dog without AKC papers may make you really question where it came from since there isn't too much that goes into getting them other than having registered parents. Some people have been known to use papers for one dog on another one that they aren't able to get papers on. There is a lot of funny business with the whole thing.

Thanks for the explanation. I thought that as well. It's funny, on my Lily's Family Tree, all the relatives have amish names. And here comes Lily LaRue to screw up the lineage!

Actually APRI was started a long time ago by people that worked at AKC and were not happy with the way customers were treated. APRI only registers dogs with a proven pedigree meaning you have to show them an AKC traceable pedigree. They have dog shows just like AKC. They do not register any cross-breeds. Really a registry is only as good as the people that are using it. There is crooks in every registry, AKC included.
