Question Not sure of Puppies grandparents

Hi all

Just wondering, is it a major problem that I don't know my puppies ancestory?

When we went to view the litter, both parents were there and they were both IKC (Irish Kennel Club) registered. However, we didn't think to ask about the grandparents.

Will this be a major problem if we decide to show our Buddy?

Thanks for all the great advice so far.

Andy

Being IKC-registered should not be a problem - as long as the litter was indeed registered, of course (not just the parents). I think IKC works the same as most kennel clubs - in which case, the litter should have been registered by the breeder and each pup individually registered/named at a later date (usually at the time they're sold, so the new owner details can be registered) and you should have received a copy of his pedigree direct from the IKC. If you don't have it, check with the breeder on that one.

In most cases with a foreign-registered dog, you need to have a certified export certificate issued by the home country registering authority (IKC in this case) and to then have the dog added to the UKs register. Check the KC rules though - they'll be stated on the KC website. For Ireland it would not surprise if the registration is just accepted outright (ie. no export cert required) and IKC dogs able to be shown without transfer, but you'd need to check that.

When we bought Buddy, the breeder got us to leave our names and address with him and said that he would forward this documentation when he received it back from the IKC.

He said that he had to get the litter microchipped before the IKC would allow them be registered and had only done this a few days previous to us colecting Buddy.

Does this sound right?

As far as I know, the IKC work on the same rules (or very similer) as the English Kennel Club.

It doesn't sound "not right", anyway. It is normal enough that a breeder only registers the individual pups after they go to their new homes. From there, it is a case of seeing how long the KC takes to process things.

I'd expect that to be done and to receive the registraion within three or four weeks though. If you've had him longer, it may be worth chasing up either the breeder or IKC to see where things are at.
