Pedigrees are basically horizontal family trees, read from left to right. The farthest left name (if there is one), all by itself, is the dog. The next names right are the dog's parents - sire (father) on the top, dam (mother) on the bottom. From there, the next names on the top right are the sire's sire and dam (paternal grandparents), the next names on the bottom right are the dam's sire and dam (maternal grandparents). Like this:
------------------------------Paternal/Paternal Great-Grandsire
--------------------Paternal Grandsire
------------------------------Paternal/Paternal Great-Granddam
----------Sire
------------------------------Paternal/Maternal Great-Grandsire
--------------------Paternal Granddam
------------------------------Paternal/Maternal Great-Granddam
Dog
------------------------------Maternal/Paternal Great-Grandsire
--------------------Maternal Grandsire
------------------------------Maternal/Paternal Great-Granddam
----------Dam
------------------------------Maternal/Maternal Great-Grandsire
--------------------Maternal Granddam
------------------------------Maternal/Maternal Great-Granddam
The AKC has a page on reading pedigrees, though it's mainly about the other notations.
