Wondering about a sleeping bag for backpacking

Hi! I have a boxer puppy-3 mo. old. I backpack and want to start him backpacking with me. Where I hike (Wyoming) it's not unusual for the night time temp to dip below freezing. I've been looking for a sleeping bag for him and the only one I've found is made by UHLRGEAR. At a little over 4 lbs. it seems way heavy as it's double the weight of my sleeping bag! I'm looking for other options. Any suggestions? Tx!

buy another one just like yours, zip them together for both of you and then you have a built in heater as well!! LOL Seriously tho, since you have to pack it, you should get a very lite weight one like yours.

Enjoy camping with your pup!!

I think what I'll do is get some fleece material & try my hand at sewing a bag. Tx!

We do this too. Even at home we have a fleece that we cover him up with. Otherwise he gets under our covers and then gets hot and crawls out and then gets cold and crawls back in... (it's a vicious cycle).

For camping I would also recommend a sweater, especially for a puppy. The first time we took Apollo camping he was miserable in the early morning and late evening because he was SO COLD.

Oh yeah, and www.petedge.com has sleeping bags for dogs. I've never tried them though. I don't think Apollo would use it.

Campmor.com also has a sleeping bag for dogs, but I haven't tried it yet.

Oh this is an intersting topic. I have been hiking with my two boxers for many years now. We hike a lot on the Appalachian trail and Shenandoah national park. I haven't over night camped with them yet but I will probably do so this summer.

Thanks for the links for the sleeping bags.

Do people have problems with their dogs sleeping at night when camping ...do they stay up all night barking at the wild animals. And for those who backpack how many miles a day do you cover with yoru boxer?

last year i took buster up into the sierra nevada on several over-nighters. he was @8 mos old. he didn't like the heat of the day too much and i had to slow him down. he loved the trip though. slept well the first trip but got too cold and all over me on the second (fall), which was admitedly too much of a challenge for a pup, much less a boxer. this year he gets a pack and i'll be more descriminate on where and when. didn't seem bothered by night sounds.

When Bosco was smaller I let him sleep with me in my bag...until one night there was a terrible thunderstorm and he got scaried and peed ALL over me. Now he sleeps between my feet and I cover him with a blanket.
