Old dog, New tricks???

Is my 2 year old boy to old to learn ground tracking? After reading the tracking section in Shutzhund Theory and Training Methods (just for my knowledge and maybe a future puppy), by Hillard and Barwg, I thought it might be fun to teach Sarge to track. Right now I think most of Sarge’s tracking is done with air scent, so does this mean he would have a hard time following a ground scent? Sarge is a motivated dog and loves to please.
