Red face Help my boxer does NOT bark...

Hi all

My boxergirl Rina and me are training in the IPO-programm (Schutzhund), great sport but Rina has to bark ....

The only place where she (sometimes) barks is in her crate and that is her way to protest against the cruel world. I can't reward her for that.

Trying to tease her with food and toys only results in the most amazing sit-stays-with-eye-contact ever performed (first thing she ever learned) or a very athletic work-out of sit-down-sit-down (which has been rewarded before)... even showing her the other boxer bark and receive treats doesn't ring a bell in her little head.

My husband and I are regularily barking at her (we really don't want to know what the neighbours think...) :-), so now she assumes that before she gets her food she has to do a 2 minute sit-stay and listen to us barking...

If anybody has an idea...please let me know!

Constanze + Rina "the silent one"

If she is on the sleeve or tug have your helper give several near misses (we're talking centimeters) then freezing just out of reach,

My husband and I are regularily barking at her (we really don't want to know what the neighbours think...) :-), so now she assumes that before she gets her food she has to do a 2 minute sit-stay and listen to us barking...

When my current boy was just starting I barked at the helper hoping he would join in.

If anybody has an idea...please let me know!

have fun

Re: Help my boxer does NOT bark...

How old is your dog? My dog did not use his voice until he was much older. Now he is 8 months old and more vocal.
I have learn from this page how to teach my dog the command SPEAK. When I played with him, just right before he barked (you really know it, the face will tell you, the look and etc) I would say SPEAK, then when he barked I would give him a treat. That went on about a couple of weeks, practically with other commands such as SIT, STAY, DOWN, COME, TURN. Now he is quite reliable on SPEAK command.
Good luck!
