search training
Hey guys, would like to know how i can train my baby how to search . i know you have to start small , but i would like some ideas on how to begin. i would like to train her to smell something, then try to find another object with the same scent.... then, little by little, make the search a longer distance ... well i hope that is the idea.... come on guys... help me out here... i tried a search , but could only get vague info. just want to know how to begin the training.
thanks for caring,
Abbey's Daddy,
Eddie

I know nothing but I do think it would be interesting. I just had to reply and tell you what a cutie your boy is.

Why thank you Ellen, Abbey's Actually ALOT BIGGER , haven't really gotten around to putting up new photos. but I will , when i do ,will let you know OK? Actually Abbey is a girlie, don't let the collar throw you off ), couldn't find another color at the time, so i got the blue , i figured she would grow out of it pretty quick and boy has she .... i've already stretched it out as far as it will go . time for a new collar and leash set.

Are you referring to Tracking? Tracking is where they are trained to follow a human scent, like in police work or search and rescue work. I am very interested in that kind of training myself. There are many books and videos available on how to train this as well as much info on the internet. The only reason I haven't tried it yet is I would rather have someone who knows what they are doing help me get started. I'm just afarid of doing it wrong and then having to go back and "unlearn" some bad habit in order to teach it the right way.

I know nothing about this - but I heard that you can get a leather key ring and then teach them to find the scent - in the event you can't find your keys. Obviously not the same as tracking a human scent - but I too would like to know how to teach a dog this.
My trainer said that I can teach the dog to find each of my children by saying "Find Trenton" and then walking her around the house until we find him together and give her a treat. Then keep doing this - until you can say "Find Trenton" she would start on her own. Then have the kids start hiding and play like a hide n' seek game. I am going to start this with Chloe in the next week or two - I will post how it is going.

Sure it is. Your scent would be on the key ring and that is what they would look for.

That is done at the "Utility" level of AKC obedience. It is referred to as "articles". You have 2 kinds of articles, leather and metal,( I think six of each), and they have to pick the one out that you touched (1 leather,1 metal).
It's relatively simple for the dog, the hard part is making them understand what you want them to do.

I hope you don't think I was correcting your spelling! Heck, I'm not sure if I'm spelling it right! I think we are talking about the same thing. Are they shaped like a dumbell?
