Aural Hematoma

Has anyone had to deal with an Aural Hematoma on a cat. I have seen it with two different breeds of dogs before (husky mix and chocolate lab), but never a cat.

I took my 13 yr old cat, Morgan, to the vet on tuesday and thats what the vet said it was. He said he's seen hundreds of dogs with it, but Morgan was only his second cat (kinda unusual to see a cat with it were his words).

He drained it and took out 12 cc's of blood, and said it may come back. Well the ear is starting to swell a little bit again. Nothing like it was before. I have researched it and it says its not life threatening (the liquid will be reabsorbed into the body), but it will deform the ear (cauliflower ear), if it is not drained or operated on.

I am not worried about Mogan's ear being deformed (we have an 11 cat (Sebastian) who was born with a deformed ear, but I am worried about the pain he may be in. Do I continue to have it drained, or do I let the fluid be reaborbed into his body.

Anybody else dealt with this?

One of my older cats had it on both ears before she passed, but my mother took care of it. Ill see what she says. I work in a shelter and a LOT of the cats have the 'cauliflower' ears. Seems quite common to me.

When my dog Brady had one, I was told by the vet that he wasn't in any pain even though it looks painful. He said at the most, it feels a little odd because of the fluid weighing the ear down a bit.

I choose not to surgically correct Brady's either as I don't care for anesthesia for cosmetic purposes and as far as I could see, the surgery would be purely cosmetic since there were no ill effects except for a deformed ear.
