boston terriers

My wife wants to get a boston terrier. We currently have a 10 month old boxer. I was wondering if anyone else has this pair together. Or any other suggestion would be appreciated. We would like a smaller dog though something 30lbs and under. The dog needs to be kid friendly. We have 3 1/2 and 1 1/2 year old daughters. I can't imagine Bailey(boxer) having any trouble with any breed she has been around all kinds of dogs and we have never had a problem. Bailey's also great with the girls.

I know many people who have the boxer/boston mix. I'm sure you'll be fine.

My DH grew up with Boston's.
They don't call them Boston "TERRORS" for nothing!
Some people assume that since their physical appearance is similar to a Boxer (only smaller) that they might have the same personality.
In my experience.....THEY DO NOT. <just my opinion>
But I am coming from a place of having been around quite a few over the past 20+ years that were all raised by my inlaws. I could be a little jaded!
I'm sure they are perfectly well rounded dogs when not raised by those that are clueless. All of the Bostons my inlaws (including both sister-in-laws) have had including current ones have been biters/nippers to adults and children.
Again....just my opinion!!!

I'm right there with you Cami!

I thing the "Terror" fits much better than Terrier, any day (in all terriers not just the Boston.) They seem like perfectly fine dogs to me, I just would personally never own one. Not my cup of tea.

I love Bostons! Rowdy and Disco's two favorite friends are bostons and they certainly can keep up with the boxers antics. One thing I would caution you is that if you're looking to get a puppy, you probably want to wait until your boxer is closer to the 1.5 to 2 year mark. At ten months old you are about to embark on the terrible teens and your boxer may try you in a lot of ways. It can be quit demanding at times and it might get a little stressful raising a puppy and trying to handle a teenage boxer at the same time. Just my two cents.

Of course the title of this thread caught my attention!

I happen to think that Boxers and Bostons go hand in hand. I have been owned by and loved boxers for 18 years. Five years ago when I wanted to add a third dog to our pack we decided on a small dog because we lived in town and didn't have a very big yard. Having two grown boxers was enough large dog for our property. I did some research, went to some dog shows and finally decided on a Boston Terrier. I have never regretted my decision. At first I was surprised at how much fiestier (is that word) a boston puppy was as compared to a boxer puppy. I had never had a terrier breed before. This fiestiness obviously was a terrier trait. I find that personality wise Bostons and Boxers are very much alike. The are both crazy, inquisitive, spunky, lovable, soft, sweet, cuddly and sometimes very bad! I would highly recommend adding a Boston to your family.

I just lost my Boxer Avery last month and now I only have the two Bostons. One year prior to loosing Avery we lost Jack to DM. My home is not the same without a Boxer and I cannot wait to have another one in my life. But I tell you, if I didn't have the Terrorists
the last month I probably would have gone crazy.

And I should add the both of my Bostons are kid friendly. Indy absolutely adores our 3 year old grandson, he follows him everywhere and is so gentle and patient with him. Henry who is only 11 lbs full grown is great with kids too and he will actually allow the 3yr old to pick him up and carry him around!

Here's a pic of my crew just after we added Indy

Bostons are adorable puppies, but they are filled with a ton of energy. My papaw has a 9 week old one named Bandit and he is just like all other terriers I've seen. He hops around and wants to play all the time. My boxer is almost 8 weeks old and he loves to play with Bandit, but he does get a little annoyed from time to time due to the fact that Bandit wants to play for a longer time period than Caesar does. I think a Boston would be a great addition to your family.

Bostons are great little dogs! We are on our second one and have had no trouble with them. I think bad reputations in any breed are the product of bad owners.

Bostons are great and really have a lot of the same characteristics of Boxers! Cooper's best friend (and Killians before he passed) is a Boston that we dog sit for regularly. They are two peas in a pod. They are very vocal, love to play and wrestle, run and fetch, and of course cuddle. My sister also has two Bostons and she brought them with her from Denver when they came to visit last week. It was hilarious the way those two bossed my big Cooper around. haha They are just not used to big dogs, so were a bit much, but no one ever got hurt and they actually had a good amount of fun. All the Bostons that I know that have been well socialized and trained are great, and remind me SO much of Boxers. We actually plan to rescue one in the very near future.
