turtles and toads
My 9-year-old son has 5 Chinese Fire Belly Toads. He started with 4, one died about a month ago. Not really sure why, they were given to him back in October so it might have been old - they weren't sure of ages. Then I bought him 2 more for his birthday. The two new ones are so afraid of movement that if you walk by the tank they hop away and hide. Very different from the other ones. They could care less about you being there.
My 8-year-old son has 3 Florida Red Belly Turtles. He originally had 5 turtles, but unfortunately 2 died. He was devastated. The first one that died was his favorite - it was the most active. Which is probably why it managed to flip itself upside down and drown. About a week later one got sick and died. I just new it was going to go, so I told him in the morning I thought it was sick, and sure enough, when we got home, it was dead.
So of course now they keep asking questions about our boxer Harley Girl and if she is going to die. And then of course there has to be 20 other questions to go along with it, like will I bury her by their pets (which is not possible) and when will we get another boxer, etc. But I really dont want to get another dog after she passes. I'd love to get another boxer now for her to play with, but ten or so years from now I really dont think so. I just really don't want any more pets. I think I'm just tired of having to take care of everyone and everything. Does that sound too selfish?
