Microchipping?

I was wondering if anyone knew what the most widely used microchip for pets was, and any advice on the subject. I didn't know what forum to put this on. My vet can do Home Again, but I use to have AVID with my boxer that passed this summer.

Is there a benefit to doing one or the other? Or a different brand?

Most horrible experience is you feel the presence of lost pet everywhere, all the time, we know that our loved one is also missing us and we both are helpless. After loosing our Cookie for 3 months, we have realized what miserable experience it is to loose our companion who wakes us, takes us for walks, their enthusiasm for car rides encourages us to take breaks to go out. They fill our life with happiness.

Microchip helps in authenticating ownership, tracking if that microchip number is registered in databases. But if the finder chooses to keep the dog and be quite, there is very slim chance of tracking with microchip.

You will find enough information at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microchip_implant_(animal)

Below is my own story:
Our Cookie was stolen on 6th April '08. We printed posters with Cookies photos and our phone number and posted everywhere. Cookie has travelled with us in car from the time we got her (when she was 45 days old). I was sure she recognizes the horn sound. We used to go out at night when it is quite, after 11 and honk horn in every street. In some places we got positive response. But we were not able to locate her.
All had left hope that we will ever get back Cookie. But somehow I could not stop looking for her. After three months I was able to track her to a house. From this place we had responses on the first few hours of search, but we were not able to get a confirmation as there was one more male Boxer with them and they were not ready to answer questions. They had tied her in a third floor room and used to take her for a walk at 3:30 every morning to avoid anyone recognizing her. I found her after 85 days. I had more than 1500 photos of her and her happiness to see us proved we are the original owners.
Now she is suffering from psychological fear that she will loose me again. Even to-day after 5 months of getting her back she freezes still if the leash is taken off during our 2 walks a day.

At that time I did some search and found that there are different standards of microchips Cookie, Suzy are micro chipped and the ID is registered with Kennel Club of India.
