Intro

I've popped in here to learn about the Boxer. My family and I have been searching and researching for a long time about different dog breeds and are zeroing in on a couple, one is the Boxer.

We're fairly active (i jog pretty much every day), both sides of the family has dogs and the smallest child is mine (she's 11), so no really little ones. We're not terribly social, but we do have a circle of friends that we get together with

I'd love to hear about problems other then the genetic disorders due to 'perfecting the breed'. Also, I'd like to know the pluses and minuses about males and about females. I don't have any desire to make boxers a business so breeding isnt even a curiosity. I'd like to know about the personalities about the genders. I know males can be difficult around other male dogs.

One final thing -- how do boxers do if there's another pet (a cat) already in the house?

Welcome to BW!! All I can say is that I LOVE my boxers, but I also did a LOT of research before bringing my first one home. Some suggestions - they are very very energetic...so if you want a lay around dog I wouldn't go for a boxer. Second back-yard-breeders (BYB) are to be very much avoided when finding a pup. Since boxers have many genetic health concerns you want a breeder that has done all of the health testing. See the health forums for this. Also, expect to spend a lot of money. Boxers are prone to skin problems and therefore especially need high quality food and medical care.

Otherwise I think the boxer is the most charismatic and wonderful of all dog breeds. They are very loving and emotional (at least mine are) and could tell you an entire story with thier facial expressions. I wouldn't trade mine for the world.

Be sure to do your research before letting a dog depend on you with its life. If you decide to adopt, many of the dogs have been evaluated around cats....

Best of luck!
