Venison

We live in the woods, so we've always got plenty of places to get venison from (boyfriend's stepfather hunts, and his mother hates the venison, so they usually are giving it away by the end of the seaosn). I was wondering if this is an ok meat to give to the dogs with a homecooked diet? I've seen it in canned Evo I believe, but I do know theres some other bacteria that can sometimes be in deer meat, so I wasn't sure if it's super processed in order to be digestable or something wierd, and thought I'd check

As far as I know it's just fine to give either raw or cooked. That's great you can get it so readily. Good luck!

Absolutely give it to the pups! They will love it and it is a very low-fat meat. You don't even have to cook it! Just give them a chunk. My dogs are on RAW and they get it quite often, thanks to those who donated it off craigslist.

Stay clear of venison sausage or pre-formed burgers, as the sausage have spices mixed in and the burgers sometimes do as well. And don't feed meat with any kibble at the same sitting......in case you didn't know.

As far as bacteria goes......as long as it is frozen atleast 2 weeks (some say 4), there is nothing "alive" any longer. Freezing will kill most bacteria's that we have to be concerned about here in the states.

Enjoy the bounty! Your dogs will!

My girls enjoyed a deer leg dinner just a few nights ago

I wasn't aware of the bacteria issue... good thing we decided to freeze it first!

Caney, love the new Avitar!!! Your babes are just so dang adorable!

Some don't freeze it at all. Gives it to them fresh. I'm thinking it doesn't really matter much seeing they will eat just about anything half rotten if they find it.

I freeze it cause I am a bit paranoid being new to RAW. But I am getting a little more lax as time progresses.
