Rabbit?
My local grocer has frozen rabbit meat. Is this a good meat for pups and does anyone cook it or is it a good raw source? Thanks in advance

I feed raw but my dogs all just ate a whole rabbit the other day and loved it.

Yep...Is it a whole rabbit? or Ground rabbit?
Totally OT, but the first time I gave Rowdy a whole rabbit he didn't quite know what to do with it. After he got the hang of it I left him alone in the backyard to finish the meal, well not more than about 10 minutes later I see Rowdy running back and forth flipping the rabbit up in the air and pouncing on it like he was stalking his prey...it was the funniest sight.

We used to feed whole raw rabbit. Then one day while at the vet in the waiting room we picked up a desease/worm book on canines. It showed some nasty looking worm the dogs can get if eating raw rabbit. It sounded like it could get serious if untreated. We quit with rabbit at that time but would do it again cooked. Plan to do some rabbit hunting after football season. Anyone know what type of worm this would be?
Thanks, MikeB

Looks to be "parts", not ground but not whole either. I will have to take a closer look...

All wild game is potentially a source of parasites. Unlike meat raised for the human food chain, wild game is not routinely vaccinated, de-wormed and inspected for parasites prior to sale. I don't know what rabbits in your area of the world might specifically be liable to carry (these things do vary by region! And are sometimes only relevant for certain areas too). In most cases though, parasites can be killed by freezing the meat for a good couple of weeks prior to feeding the meat to the dog. That is a good general precaution that should be taken with all meat, and especially offal, from wild sources. It doesn't mean wild game isn't a great food source - just that it needs that sort of simple precaution taken.

I read another thread about pressure cooking whole chickens and mashing it all together before feeding. Would this be ok to do with wild rabbit? Fur, organs, and all?
thanks
