Sorry for all the questions.......I really really appreciate all the help I'm receiving in this thread.

One more question. So do I add the bonemeal to each meal or can I add it to the pot to cook with everything else. I'm trying to make this as easy as possible and would rather just throw everything in the pot if I can.

i can't think of any reason that you can't just add it to the pot with everything else.

Re: Switching to Homecooking (need help)

I just wanted to say THANKS so very much for this thread. I have been thinking about homecooking for a while but always thought it was far too difficult!!!! Silly me - I shall be starting Billy on homecooking as soon as I can. Thanks again for all the great information.

Thanks Jan. I was just reading some old threads in the recipe forum and came across one about adding in bone meal powder and Gmacleod replied with an answer and within her answer, she stated "(sprinkle some on before feeding, don't cook it in with the meat)."..........now I'm confused.......can I cook it in with the doggie stew or no? Please help

I don't see why it would matter as the bone meal has already been cooked, especially if you just stirred it in after the stew was all done.

You might be able to buy it at a butcher shop somewhere. I cant think of any off the top of my head in GR, but I am sure there are some in the area. I think it might even be cheaper to buy your meat from a place like that, rather than Meijer or other grocery stores.
I have a question about venison meat. I asked my aunt and uncle who hunt and they are going to give me the offcuts of the deer and turkey they kill for free! I'm so excited. My question is this.....as far as adding things like offal, i.e. gizzards, hearts, etc.......can that come from the deer or should that come from more like chicken or turkey gizzards? I'm 99% sure my aunt and uncle will just throw that stuff away so I will ask them for that as well if it's ok to feed (cooked).

Ok thanks for the reply. I really appreciate it. I will probably just add it to each meal once I put them in their tupperwear containers and then freeze them. Thanks again.

Actually, most deer hunters (according to dbf) gut the deer in the field and leave the insides there for the animals to eat. You might have to go out there with him and gather them because the deer is REALLY heavy with all its guts inside Funny that I know this huh? I went with dbf when he shot his deer last year and had to stand there and hold the flashlight while he gutted the thing...ugh, it was pretty disgusting. THEN...I had to ride back to his parents house with a dead deer in the back of his Jeep. Now you know why I can feed RAW

I asked my aunt about the guts stuff and she said they absolutely throw that stuff away and that they will save it for me if I want it. They have a meat grinder too and they can grind up anything I need too. This is working out so well! So the "guts" of the deer are ok to feed her right? Like in place of buying gizzards and such?

I would assume that the guts of the deer are ok to feed, they would be just like any other animal. Seems like in the wild, deer would be found more than chicken or cows, so I think it would be fine. I have actually heard that deer meat is very good for dogs (and people) because it is pretty lean (obviously that doesnt make a difference in the guts and stuff). I think you would be fine! Dbf has a grinder also and cuts up all his own deer. He grinds almost all the meat (except for the tenderloins) and Roscoe gets ground venison (boiled) quite a bit.

Thanks for the reply. I will tell them to grind the insides up too then! When is deer hunting season anyways?

Bow hunting starts either late September or early October, I think, and gun season starts the second week in November, or somewhere around there. I only know this because that is the time of year when I see dbf very little
