Search for a Holistic Vet

Our 4 month old puppy Belle has been diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy. She is on numerous medications from the cardiologist, and they have also given us a list of nutritional supplements to begin using in about 2-4 weeks. I have been wondering if I should consider finding a holistic vet to work with us also. At this early point in her treatment, I don't know what to think about adding another vet into the mix because I will need to work closely with my regular vet and the cardiologist, but I also want to provide the best care I can for her. Also, while it's not that I don't believe in the power of alternative therapies, I seriously doubt I could stop giving Belle any of the medications that the cardiologist has prescribed for her. Are holistic vets willing to work in conjunction with traditional therapies? I printed out a list of some holistic vets in my area from the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association and I am not sure what type of therapies I should be looking at for Belle's condition. What is the difference between a holistic vet and a homeopath? Would someone who specializes in nutrition, herbs and supplements be better for us than say someone who does chiropractics and acupuncture? Any insights would be appreciated. Thanks --

I don't think that it would hurt in any way to seek info from all that you mentioned. You could take all of the gathered info to the one vet that you trust and seek out the best form of treatment that way.

You can never have too much information when dealing with an illness. I had a cat that sufferred from chronic renal failure and I researched for 4 years (and kept her alive) by learning all that I could about her condition. We had to let her go at the age of 17 but I am happy that I did all that I did to help her quality of life during the last 4 years.

Alot of vets don't expect that the owners are willing to go above and beyond traditional therapies therefore most go unmentioned. If you were to arm yourself with alot of knowledge I would think that your vet would be willing to work with you in creating a very good treatment path for you to travel.

Good-Luck

We went to a Boxer rescue to get our little girl in Nov., the previous owners didn't want to deal with her extreme diarrhea and gave her up. We fell in Love with her at first sight and wanted to give her a chance. The vets thought it could be Colitis and wanted to put her on all kinds of meds. She was very sick around the holidays and spent 4 days at the hospital. She began to eat again but still had the diarrhea when she came home Christmas Eve.
We started really looking into natural foods and holistic and what an improvement. It seems like she has food alergies and was actually having problems with the food the vet perscribed her. We have since hooked up with a company that deals with all natural items. She put on all the weight she lost when she was sick and a few extras. She looks better now than ever, very happy & normal poop.
Traditional Vets have there place but I also think holistic is worth looking into. When we take her back next month for her check up we are going to find a Holistic Vet.
Good luck in your search!
