The titers costed $200. They tested for rabies, parvo and distemper. I am not going to give Luke the Bortadella shot. I am sure he will be ok. We won't find out the results of the titer for a few days and the rabies 1 month!

Leia is going to doggy camp too but she doesn't need titers b/c she came from Idaho and Canada/US customs need to see that all her shots are up to date before she travelled. So they gave her shots before she came to us. But saying that......she also developed kennel cough 2 days after she got here! Needless to say those will be the last shots she ever gets too!

Jen - I agree with Jan. If you can get away with not vaccinating for kennel cough, that is great. I have been told that this vaccine can affect the immune system the most. Glad to hear that you were reimbursed. What did you end up paying for the test?

Titers for Mason cost about $60 with our holistic vet. I have been working with a conventional vet for Penny who is closer so I am going to call her to see what she charges. If it is a lot more, I will drive the hour to the holisitic vet...I didn't even think that there would be a price difference.

Rabies Titre $135.89
Viral Titre $50.66
Total $186.55 plus taxes

Check around. The holistic vet here only charges $165 for both. Needless to say, we are now looking for a new vet. One that does both traditional and holistic.

Good morning,

Unfortunately, after living with dogs my entire life, I have just become aware that I really do have an option to vaccinating. I truly thought that it was legaly mandatory. Guess I've been living with my head in the ground.

Indy is now 3 years old, I want him to live to be around and healthy for as long as possible. He eats a very good diet (thank you Boxerworld!) and is in good health so far. Literally made me cry when reading some of the articles and I read that vaccination can cause autoimmune diseases. My youngest son has Addison's disease - did I cause that? No way of ever knowing...

This morning, I've been reading everything I can find about the Titre testing, just because someone mentioned it in a thread in another forum.

Are holistic vets common? I adore the vet that I currently use, they specialize in bully breeds and gush over Indy everytime he goes in there. Do most vets typically offer these tests as well?

Once again, I would like to thank everyone who contributes to this board for all of the information that is shared. Helpful beyone belief.

Hi Indy's Mom - better late than never. Thank goodness for this site! I would think that most vets would offer the titer testing - holistic vets, regular vets and homeopathic vets. Hugs to your baby. Joanne

Funny thing I didn't know that our vet offered titre testing till I had to for the doggy camp. I would imagine that any vet can do it. As you read from my previous post, they got all weird about it when I asked about it and made the appt. for it. The holistic vet advertises that they do titres. And they were very happy in providing me the information on it. I would just ask your vet.

I'm still waiting on the results, as apparently it takes quite a number of weeks for the information to be returned. I am now on the lookout for a new vet. There is one in our neighbourhood that just opened up that practices both traditional and conventional.

Good luck! Keep us posted

We did titres on Woody this June. Two of his came back low and one was normal. We paid about $80 for all three but then we vaccinated since he was low. Hopefully next year they will all be normal.

Our three are going to Doggy Day Camp also because we are going to Hawaii in September also. What islands are you going to and when?

We will be starting out on Oahu with family and then going to Maui and the Big Island. We are staying at Bed and Breakfasts. They price is right and they both have dogs. Neither have Boxers but I guess any warm furry body will have to do. I am going to miss my kids so much. We will be there the last two weeks of the month.

That's another question I had.....what do you do if their titres are low? I guess the only option is to vaccinate?

We are going to Kauai leaving around the 20th for one week. We rented a condo out there. We will miss our babies ALOT. This is the first time that either of them have stayed at a camp. It's so hard

Have a good time!!!!

You can also opt not to vaccinate. It seems like a double edged sword.

I am so confused. I hate to compare human to animal but one would think it would be the same. I am in the medical field and am required to be vaccinated against Hepatitis B. If my titres drop too low I am supposed to revaccinate but am not required to. There are two sides to the fence. One says that you need adequate titre levels. The other says that once you have been exposed to the vaccination that you develop the antibodies and in the event of an exposure the antibodies will effectively react.

So what do you do with your dogs if their titres are low?
