Red face sensitive subject

My 6 year old boxer has pus that comes out of his penis, he has had it since i got him as a puppy, it is yellow and smells metallic, he got checked out when he was a puppy and the vet said he didnt know what it was and hed grow out of it.
So i left it at that and ended never thinking about it its only recently ive realised id gotten used to it, hes is extremely healthy in every other way, and he is not bothered by it.

Ive read a couple of old posts on here about his and someone said antibiotics, but i prefer not to use antibiotics unless i have to and prefer holistic approachess.

So my question is if anyone else had experienced this, and i was thinking of using natural immune boosters (herbal remedies etc) but not sure what to use, and also i know goldenseal root is a kind of natural antibiotic and that i have used on myself but am not sure if you can use it on dogs.

sorry its a bit long, any suggestions appreciated

It is quite normal for a male dog to have a slight discharge from his penis. Pus-Like Discharge from Penis

Chico has this too! It is gross. I talked to the vet several months ago and he says it is normal and will come and go. There is nothing to do about it. He said that antibiotics would only help on a temporary basis and there was no need for them. He also said he had tried other things for other dogs and it only helps for a little while. I know it is really nasty. We keep antibacterial wipes around to wipe the couch and whatever else he "weenie wipes" as we call it. Chico don't have it all the time. Just comes and goes.

Chico was neutered in March and it is a little better, but still there. I guess it is not there as often. Oh well, there are more gross things I guess.

Wow...I didn't realize that this was so common. I assumed that this was symptomatic of a UTI. Charlie had this several months ago - a discharge that is greenish and smells very metallic. He tested negative for a UTI. The slide did show some bacteria but nothing out of the ordinary.

It passed but he is currently going through another round. The discharge we can handle - messy but we can deal. The smell however is really gross and makes us worry more. It is very metallic and when he licks then his breath is metallic.

I am interested if anyone has any suggestions!

Keep me up to date with your test results ill be interested to see what they find

Just wanted to update. We did go to the vet (we have rotating docs and this time saw another) and were prescribed a low dose antibiotic. I know - not holisitic - sorry if this offends.

Our vet felt that the green discharge signified that things were a bit off (clear or light yellow is normal). Given that I didn't notice much more than the metallic smell and green discharge, whatever is going on is probably only at the tip (not penetrating the sheath or moving up to the bladder). I have to say, after a day of treatment - the smell is gone and the licking has decreased. I didn't think he was licking so much as it seems that is what he does when in doubt but...it now is evident that it was more frequent than usual.

I wish we didn't need to take antibiotics and that there was something better. Apparently this is common puppy stuff which he will grow out of. They don't know whether it comes from the tongue licking the penis and transferring the bacteria that way or visa versa.

Just thought I would share...

Boys....

Sometimes I don't know what I'd do without BoxerWorld....
As bf and I are eating dinner sitting on the floor the other night (don't ask, my kitchen is being demolished right now, stupid landlord ) Boze prances up, and sits down legs wide open. Bf scoots back and yells, "you're dealing with his 'happy mess' not me!" I explained to him that it was actually just a little infection and that I had no problem cleaning it up if he wasn't brave enough
I actually had to get on here later and prove to him that I knew what I was talking about, and now there will be no more harassing mom when she says she knows what she's talking about.
