Please Help! The humane Society put my Friends Boxer down!!!!

This is kinda long, but if anyone has anyadvice on what can be done it will be much appreciated. A good friend of mine has a gorgous flashy brindle male boxer. He was about a year old and the most loving boxer I have seen. He loved people so much. Boost jumped my freinds fence while he was at work. When he got home and noticed that boost was missing, he called me to help him look. We ended up talking to some of the neighbors who said they found him in their yard and took him to the humane society about 4pm not knowing who he belong too. We went straight to there, but they had already closed. My friend was there waiting when they opened this morning, but they said they had put him down as soon as he came in!!!!! They didnt even wait a day to see if anyone claimed him!! This dog was gorgous and as healthy as an ox, so they had to know someone whould be looking for him. Not to mention he had a collar!! He doesnt believe them, he thinks that someone there decided to keep the dog. The Lady responded with " your dog is dead, we killed him" My friend then asked to see the body. The lady said" Ok hes in the freezer" but when he pursed it further she said that the body had already be disposed of in the incinerator! They then called the police on him to get him to leave. I went down there shortly after this. I aked them how they could do this, and they laughed in my face!! I asked why they didnt wait, they responed with they didnt have room, I then asked them about all the empty kennels they had out side. They then called the police on me!!

What can we do! This just doest seem right! They even told me they put him down right when he was brought in!! Why would they not at least give an owner a day to claim or try to rehome such a perfect dog?

Is there anyone that we can report this too?

WOW.

That is one of the most rediculous things I have heard of in quite awhile and if everything you wrote there is true, I don't think the dog was put down at all.

What did the police say??

Yes i assure you everything is true. The polce were actually nice and just asked us to leave. What can we do? We recorded the conversation we had with them the second time. I still cant believe they smiled and laughed when I asked why they did this.

Although I don't know much about this, I am inclined to agree with your friend. I would be willing to bet somebody took him home. Our Humane Society has a board of directors. Can you contact the president of the Humane Society or one of the members if they have a board? Lodge a complaint with the state that you live in, call the attorney general's office, somebody. I would be making any phone call I could think of. I hope they are lying and somebody has him so you friend has a chance to get him back. Keep us informed how this turns out.

My friends mother has contacted the 33/40 which is our local news and they might do a story on it. We need all the help we can get, so this would be a huge step in the right direction

I just have to ask- this was the Humane Society? And not Animal Control?

I know that in MO here, they have a law for "strays" that says they must be held for at least 5 business days- so the owner has a chance to look for their lost pet- and on the 6th day, the animal can be adopted, rescued or euthanized.

Did you ask to see the intake papers on the dog? If a neighbor turned him in, then it should be classified as "stray relinquish"... and what neighbor is just going to take a dog to the humane society instead of asking other neighbors who's he might be?

Sounds like the Humane Society is giving you and your friend the run around... if he was that good looking of a dog, you better bet somebody took him home. Animals are usually put down if there is really no room, or are aggressive, and the way you say they laughed, that dog was probably in the next room...

Was he microchipped?? If so, call the chip company and let them know what has happened in case anybody tries to change anything. Also, put a call out to local vets who might do a microchip check on a new dog that comes in... never know what you might find.

Good luck

My immediate thought was if there was a chip to call and report him stolen. Then if ever his chip was read, it would show up as such.

I can't believe they would just put him down. That's crazy for any rescue! And a pure bred boxer at that! I bet if you ask for the admittance papers, they would probably be "misfiled".

Someone has him. In no way, would anyone in the business, put down a pure bred that quick, knowing the value of them.

I'd contact the police and file a report of theft. That is what they in fact did without searching for the owner. If someone found a wallet on the street, they must report it to the police or they are in violation of the law for receiving stolen property. I'd think the same would be true for a dog. Especially a rescue/shelter who's best interest is returning the pet back to the home it belongs.

Aren't most Humane Society shelters no kill? I have never heard of any rescue or pound for that matter euthanizing within a day. If they don't have room they typically don't take the animal. Something smells here

I don't know WHO you should contact BUT a good majority of states have some sort of law with regards to dogs being picked up. I know that in Ohio all shelters must wait for 72 HOURS (3 days) before anything can happen to that dog (aside from medical injuries so severe to save).

The shelter must supply your friend with documentation regarding the INTAKE of the dog (where it came from, including a turn-in) and final outcome of the dog. They can't just tell you what they want to tell you there must be proof (if this is a county/city/state run facility).

I hope & pray that indeed a shelter worker OR possibly even a rescue was called and picked this boy up. It's one thing to lie and get to the bottom of it but another entirely to BREAK THE LAW and destroy a healthy animal without giving the owner ample time to locate it.

A quick search found this site (hopefully it is ok to post). It is an Alabama Pet Registry with links to various county/state facilities.

There may be useful info somewhere??

I'd definitely look into it. In my area the Humane Society CANNOT take a stray dog as it HAS to go to and is required to go to by law, animal control for X number of days to wait for someone to claim it. If at that point nobody has claimed it HS can bail it out or whatever. They can take owner surrenders, but they typically charge a fee, not sure if those people said they owned the dog or what. But I would definitely look into your state laws, as I know with ours HS cannot legally take a stray dog over 3 months of age without it staying at animal control (the pound) for X number of days.
