Liquid/Loose Stool..

Caused purely by food? We're switching off of Purina One to something more nutritious.. but food cause of stool issues? Puppy is 7 weeks old, almost 8.. or is this normal for his age?

I had the same problem. My boxer came eating Purina Puppy Chow and I knew I had to change that right away. I changed to Nutro Puppy over a two week period and it was terrible. It was like water and she had no control over her bowels. This made training impossible. We had to switch back to the Purina (which I think is a terrible food) to get her back on track. I am now slowly changing food again (1/4 cup of new the first week, 1/2 cup of the new the second, etc..). So far so good, but we are only on week one. I also went to Natural Balance Ultra Premium and stayed away from Nutro. I feel for you. When you make the change be sure to do it slowly.

When we first got Max (eight weeks) he ended up with very runny stool even though we were using the same food as the breeder. I'm sure it was due to the stress on leaving his mom and littermates and a very sensitive digestive tract ( we still have to watch what treats etc. he gets or how much or else!) I think the best thing you can do is find a good quality dog food and slowly make the switch. We ended up using Canadia and it hasn't given us any problems. There's lots of threads about brands of food. Good luck! Denise

I am not sure about the use in little puppies, but when I was switching my adult boy's food I added some canned pumpkin and on the side I baked them pumpkin and apple cookies for treats. I hear canned pumpkin is used to regulate both loose stool or constipation...must be magic! Please be sure to check if pumpkin is ok for use in such young pups.

Not all foods agree with all dogs, so keep trying I am sure you will find what works for your dog....since we all here know how purina foods rate

So what could be the cause of the loose stool? Stress+food+?

I would consult your vet if you continue to have problems with loose stools. I am sure there are many reasons why pups can have loose stools, including parasites. Especially if you have tried unsuccessfully to get them regulated.

I had al the problems - bloody diarrhea. I finally switched to BARF and within a week and a half he had solid bowel movements. This was after over a year of problems. I truely could not believe it - I will never go back to kibble.

PUMPKIN is really truely the best thing for the diarrhea problem. Use a heaping tablespoon a day - any more will cause loose poop.

On the kibble side of things - None worked for me but Nutro Lamb and rice I HEARD was a good kibble to fix this type of problem.
