foods not made by Diamond

I don't make a lot of money, and right now my dog is eating better food than I do. He became very ill on Taste of the Wild so I purchased a bag of Blue Buffalo for him to eat now that he is off the prescription diet. I had a hard time paying for the TOTW and the Blue Buffalo costs more, but since he is recovering I wanted to make sure to go with a brand I am familiar with.

When he's done with this bag, I need to transition him to another food. Right now $50 every three weeks for 30 lbs of food is too much for me. I really need to get him something less expensive and not made by Diamond. 4 star foods are okay, but I don't want to feed him junk. Is there anything not expensive but of decent quality that's not made by Diamond? No degree of convincing would work to get me to go back to them, unfortunately.

A lot of posters have had good luck with Earthborn brand food. It's supposed to be affordable and is similar to TOTW (but not made by diamond).

When I fed just Acana, Johann would eat a 28 lb bag every 5-6 weeks ($60 bag). With very caloric rich foods, the price is higher but you have to feed less. I actually figured out that it is cheaper for me to feed Orijen than Beneful (not that I would feed him that food) because he has to eat so much less of the quality food.

I know how you feel we always had our boy on a high cost food $80 a month and for 7yrs we was fine with it until I got sick and couldn't work and only had one income money was tight but I didn't want my boy to go to cheaper food because of tummy problems so this is what I did for a while and it was ok and his food would last alot longer.6wks instead of 4wks.I started giving him cooked veggies, like carrots, broccoli, green beans, sweet potatoes, ect.when we had our meals we just added extra for him also we from time to time we bought a cheap food and added just a 1/2 cup of cheap food with 2 1/2 cups of excellent food it really got us through a rough patch and he loved the left overs and he did well on it.Good luck

Yes, earthborn holistic grain free could be an option. Where I live it is slightly more expensive than totw. You could also check into wellness, some of the stuff they make has grains in it but is still rated high on dogfoodanalysis and might be in your price range.

I just switched to Earthborn. I found it at $49 a bag. I feed less than with TOTW...

I got the grain free bison (great plains feats)

It seems like wellness might also be involved in a recall (wellness large breed puppy).

Distributor States Canidae, Natural Balance, and one Wellness Product Recalled

It is hard to find a good/affordable food theses days!!!!!

How about Fromm? I don't know what prices are like in your area... we sell TOTW for $42 and Fromm is only a couple bucks more than that. But that ingredients are good quality and the company is much more reputable.

Otherwise I agree that Earthborn is also a good bet for reasonably priced, non-Diamond food.

There has been a recall from diamond, including TOTW, for salmonella. You may want to look into this being a possible cause why your boxer got sick from it.

Thanks. I actually had a post about this. I'm pretty sure he had salmonella. They say it's not common in dogs, but he had all the symptoms. I am so frustrated with Diamond. I need new food, but the only thing affordable that's good is the stuff made by Diamond. I'm in a food dead zone- everyone here thinks Science Diet is the best, but most feed their dogs Ol' Roy.

I've fed Regal Sensi Bites to one of my dogs for years. It's reasonably priced and works really well for my dog's sensitive stomach. I don't know if you can find a local distributor, but maybe you could find someone online who ships for free. Their website is Regal Pet Foods.
