Deer bones

Husband got the first deer of the season on Sunday. It is all chopped up and in the freezer.

I would like to give Leah the bones to chew on. I give her plenty of raw beef bones but this would be a first with deer bones.

Which portion of the deer should I give her? The shin bones? And should I freeze them for a couple of weeks to kill any nasty stuff? Is it ok to have some of the marrow in the bone?

Boy, this will save some money. The butcher shops want plenty for the bones and Leah is a big chewer.

Thanks for any info or suggestions you can give me.

My BF just got a deer a couple weekends ago also, the girls have been having deer meat the past few days and today just gave them their first big bone from the deer. I honestly couldn't tell you which bone it was but I will ask BF and get back to you. We had the meat on ice for a few days before we had a chance to process it, but it was never actually frozen in the freezer.

Thanks Zoe, I think the dh saved the legs and threw them in the freezer. He needs to saw them up yet. I know, Leah loves the deer meat. I don't feed raw but I do lightly cook up meat for her to add to the kibble.

Non weight bearing bones are "softer" and pose less chance of breaking teeth. Not saying that a rib (for instance) won't break a tooth but being a non weight bearing bone it is less likely in relation to say a femur.

Deer bones tend to splinter, so you just need to be careful when you feed them. When they start to splinter, just take them away.
