change food?

I am adopting a former puppy mill mom. She was abandoned in a crate with puppies & almost starved to death. She has been putting on weight, is up to over 50 lbs & is a small boxer. But the only way her foster folks have been able to keep it on her is to feed her puppy food & she is around 2.

I have read puppy food is too high in protein for a dog her age. She is eating Science Diet now. She was involved in a failed adoption where she ate Iams adult & kept weight on - when she went back to the foster home they switched her back to Science Diet adult & she shed pounds rapidly, so back to puppy food.

Any thoughts on how I should proceed?

At two years old, high protein foods shouldn't be a problem. I would find a good all life stages formula to switch her over to once she settles in at her new home. Science Diet and Iams are both crap - have you seen this link?

Canidae, Timberwolf Organics, Evo, Blue Buffulo, Natural Balance all make a good product.

There is a great site for dog foods I learned about from Boxerworld. www.dogfoodanalysis.com
This will help you with most of your food questions. Science Diet is not a very good food and i believe puppy food is suppose to be lower in protein the adult food. I would check the analysis site and then read through the posts on this forum. Good luck.

When we first got Rolen, he was eating Purina ProPlan. He ate it, but didn't love it! Then I joined this site and found better options using the dog food analysis listed by other replies. I highly suggest taking a look at it...Rolen now eats Timberwolf Bison and loves it! Timberwolf also has a lot of different flavor options too! Good luck!
