How to leash train?

We are currently enrolled in Basic Obedience 1 training and we have yet to go over leash training yet.
I understand that the basic skills for this are just having the dogs attention and being able to maintain that attention. When I take Austin on walks, he completly ignores me, not necessarily pulling too hard, but he just acts like he is deaf and doesn't acknowledge me. What are some basic ways I can get more attention for leash walking, I tried carrying his favorite toy, cheese, treats...don't know how else to go about it...any suggestions or tips!

teaching your dog to "heel" is perhaps one of the more difficult commands to teach your dog. try "luring" him to walk at your side by using either his favorite treat or toy and keeping it at your hip. this will help him stay at your side, which is where you want him to be for the "heel" position. take a few steps, and if he follows, then praise him and give him the treat as a reward. gradually increase the amount of steps that you take before giving him a reward and he'll eventually get he hang of it. the most important part of teaching the "heel" command is to stay consistent with his training. always encourage him to walk at your side. also, do not change sides from the left or right. determine which side you always want him to walk on and keep him on that side. consistent training is the key.
