Red face Baylee-Wild Child

So, here I am now, over in the dog training section. Would you like to know why? Well, last night I came home from work, looking forward to trying out my new prescription that my doctor gave me to help me sleep better after Leo's passing. And in the darkness I heard breathing. Freaked me out! Then my daughter announces "Meet Baylee." I switched on the light and this very pretty 5 month old fawn boxer with a black face comes running at me. I was in complete shock!!! At first I just stood there and stared at her. She was leaping all over my feet and licking my hands. At first I cried. I was clearly not even ready for this. My hubby got up and said "Why are you crying, I thought you would be excitied." I said that I just wasn't expecting a new addition so soon. Well, then he tells me Baylee's story. She was given to a family who was expecting a baby. Well, all was good for a few weeks and then they had their baby and the fur baby got stuck in the garage. She wasn't let out to play, no training of any kind, and not really shown much love. She was only let out when she had to get shots. She has had two series of shots so I need to check out when to get the next. Anyway, they just didn't want her or have the patience to work with her. They were actually considering putting her down!!! What is worng with people. So, the girls sister couldn't handle it and basically just told them she was going to find Baylee a new home. Enter my husband and kids. After the sister hears our story she seeks us out. (through mutual friends at his work). He goes to see her and fall in love with her as well as my girls. Last night, I could barely look at her without being reminded of Leo and it hurt. Now this morning I woke to find "presents" all over the house, even after we all had taken turns letting her outside. I scolded her, firmly and gently but she doesn't get it. She just runs wild! I really wasn't happy with this new arrangement, at all. So, then she comes to me, finally sleepy, lays her head on my chest and falls asleep. She looked up at me with these big beautiful brown eyes and BAMMM! She got me hooked! Great! I am committed! Silly dog with sweet face! Grrrrrrr! So, now here it comes all over again, do all 5 month old boxers have this much energy???? We adopted Leo at 1yr 4 months. He was already house broken. This girl has no clue. She thinks my cat is her personal play toy and my house is her "surprise" box. AAAHHHHH! Can't help it though, gotta give her the best now. I am a big hearted moron! So, how do you house break a baby with NO discipline at all? Long story to get to the final question huh? Anyone have a baby like this? She trully just runs wild. I am glad that she is here now and see that she has a cuddly side. She has potential thats for sure. But, I need to get her to understand about outside potty pleasures! Help! I know it is only Day 1 but I have NO Clue where to get her to start. Never had a baby before. My daily book is done...for now. LOL

Smile congrats

Sounds like this girl needed you and I'm sure she will come around in no time. So silly to get a puppy when she obviosuly knew she was having a baby, I mean 5 months old and take 9 months to make a baby, sheesh. Anyways.. If she was locked in the garage (poor thing!!) then she I'm sure has no clue about potty training. Get her a crate first off, they are essential IMO. If she is out of your site put her in the crate (This won't last forever) Do a search, there is so much information on potty trainig and crate training.
I would say that yes all 5 months have that much energy, good news is they do crash eventually =) Make sure she gets some good hard play sessions, bored boxers are naughty boxers.
Also make sure you get a good scent remover like natural miracle for her accidents so she doesnt continue to go back to those spots to do her biz, and praise her like crazy when she goes outside.
Have fun with her, she won't be little for long!

Yea for Baylee

It sounds like she has found a much better home!! As for you, just remember that nothing is forever It's just like a husband to try to "fix" everything instead of just understanding that you need to sort things out first. At least a sweet little brown eyed girl got a good deal out of it this time! I'll bet Baylee will calm down after she gets over her excitement about getting to be around people so much and not live in a garage. She'll still have lots of energy, but she'll learn. As for potty training, keep her with you or in her crate at all times at first; she'll have to slowly earn more freedom. Gus (7 months now and inside with us since he came home from the breeder's at 8 weeks) is just now getting enough freedom to roam the house when we're home. He's still crated when we are away, luckily he loves his crate. Good luck with your new little girl! I'm sure you'll get lots of advise from people more experienced than I am.

Exclamation wait don't go!

Crate???? I have never used a crate..I will go right now if I know what to get. She needs all puppy essentials..so going anyway. She needs food (hubby gave her steak!! Thought he was giving her a welcome treat), and toys that are age appropriate, reward treats?, new collar (the one she had one was TOOOOOOOO small) and she needs ID tags, and on and on. But a crate? Huh? Too big? Too small? Eeeek! One of the things that thrills the pants off of me, is that she will so have a better home here with us. I know, a garage!??!!!! What in the world were they thinking having 2 new babies, not only that but why would you not consider that before getting Baylee! That is just irresponsible, I agree! That's ok, she will be way loved and they did us a favor. Losers! Sorry, but their treatment makes me mad. I hope they treat their skin baby better. Ok, now I am just being mean! LOL Bakc to topic...CRATE????

Life Stages

I have a Life Stages crate. I is full size for a boxer, but comes with a divider so that you block off most of the crate. A puppy prefers not go to the bathroom where it sleeps, however if the crate is too big, then they will sleep on one side and use the other side as a toilet. The little guy will only need enough room to stand up, turn around and lay down. The life stages crate is adjustable, so it grows with your baby. That is my suggestions. I got mine at PetSmart for about $70.00.

Good luck with the baby!!! Just remember, keep your eye on them and take them out often. The only accidents that have happened at my home happened because Gregory got out of my sight for just a second. Luckily, I can still count the number of accidents on my hands!!

Ohh Yes, one word: CRATE!!

I can't even begin to describe how useful a crate is. I honestly couldn't have gotten through the first few years without one. My female is no longer crated (at almost 4 years old) but she was a maniac until about 2 years of age. She had seperation anxiety, would rip anything and everything to shreds, and potty in the house if she wasn't crated. They honestly see their crate as a "safe haven" and often times, my 2 will grab a toy and go lay in their crates (with the door open) just to hang out.

Just remember to never scold the dog and put her in the crate as punishment. She needs to view the crate as her "den" and a good place -- not a bad place that she has to go when bad.

Good luck!

I am so happy for you!!!!!!!!!! I rescued an abused puppy when he was about four months old. Maybe I can help. First off, it took a little longer than expected to get him potty trained. Of course this was probably more our fault. We were not planning on getting him and we were much lazier than we were with Muggs. Just remember abused puppies just need a lot of love to make up for what they suffered. He is getting really a lot better at potty training now. We have gone almost a week with no accidents (I am knocking on a very large peice of wood now) Love that baby and know that Leo saved her for you.

we also got our bailey at 5 months. he came from a home where he wasnt badly treated but he spent the vast majority of his time alone and had virtually no training. We didnt crate to be honest. i know there are a lot of advantages, but bailey is a house dog and we wanted to be able to trust him in it! Basically we were fortunate as we got him during 3 weeks off work so we had all day every day during that for settling him in. We had the strictest rountine and ever day was the same. same thing same time, so he got to see what we were about. Because of his age the toilet training was pretty easy. he caught on real quick and was soon asking to get out, so he could get the treat that follows!!!
fair enough there were a few accidents but that was 7 months ago now and hes almost totally there! he still pretty mad as all boxers are in their own way, but he knows the way we operate, and whats acceptable and what isnt pretty well now!
good luck with her. she'll never replace leo, but shes gonna be so glad of the first class boxer luv youve got for her!!

Baylee-wild child

I think perhaps Leo sent Baylee to you...but I digress. Chloe was around 6 months when we got her. She had lived in a pet store until she got too big, then put into rescue. One advantage was that she was used to a crate. the problem was that she had NO idea that peeing and pooping OUTSIDE the crate was desired! Everything was also new to her, and she had zero idea what was expected of her. People here on Boxerworld helped us out tremendously. Rescue dogs can take a little longer to train, but the crate does help tremendously!! I know it can seem mean, especially when they are whining (Chloe still will do these pathetic sad whines when she is in it from time to time, and she lived in a crate for months!!!) it is the best thing for them. Another thing we learned with Chloe was that if we brought her out, and she didn't do her business, that she went back in the crate for 15 minutes, then we tried again. This way she will learn that going outside is for toileting, andif you don't do it, you go in the crate. Often times she would pee or poop right after coming inside! we also had to be very firm with the training, and making sure that her cuteness didn't mean she got away with murder!
