Question

I'm wondering when it is advisable to beging my puppy in obedience classes. She is quite a quick little learner at 10 weeks already, sitting on command, obeying the "down" command, sitting at corners when we walk to do out business outside (a few accidents still but she is going outside pretty regularly now). So, I know even at 10 weeks, she can learn. But, I also know she's just a little pup.

So, when is it advisable to enroll in classes (for both of us)?

Thanks for the input.

Dan

Glad to hear that Maggie Mae is doing better with the house training.

You can usually take your puppy to puppy classes as soon as they have completed their vacinations. Some classes may take you after they have had their second set of shots as that is when you can usually start exposing them to other dogs. Have you dicided where you are going to go for classes? If not, I would start looking and register as soon as possible.

Thanks. I think after she has all her shots. That sounds prudent.

Thanks for the good counsel and advice about making a reservation for classes now. I shall begin my research post haste.

Regards.

The puppy schools in this area start as young as eight weeks. My first attention has been to take Megan to puppy school unfortunately, they fill up way to fast and class fell wrong. The first class opened the day after we brought her home, what I thought was way to late. The next class is when she is going to be 16 weeks old which is almost out of the puppy kindergarden stage.

So my advice is check it out because there may be a waiting list. You also want to ask what kind of training they use. I checked into three different places for classes and they all taught different methods. Clicker, training collar and reaffirming in voice.

I'm not keen on the training collar and the voice classes were not puppy classes and I wasn't sure how she would do with adults. She is still young and her attention span is not long. Puppy kindergarden is a few weeks longer than adult classes and they take several breaks for socializing and refocusing. So I decided to go with the clicker training.

She starts the middle of next month.

When you call around they should tell you what age they start to take puppies - some require all shots with rabies, some require just the first two shots.
